Some pitchers begin their winter dormancy... as new baby pitchers grow simultaneously?
I bought one few weeks back for a dollar at lowes has one small shoot that's hanging on the rest was cut back because it was dead. I hope it makes it.
@mkinsey75 When we got ours (in the fall) we were told it would become dormant in October & look like it's dying, but then grow back in spring, as long as it doesn't get dried out 🙂 This one seems reluctant to hibernate for some reason, though
@aes239 My flytrap is dormant and it is laying really low and has a little bit of new growth. They will still have a tiny bit, and it will come back in the spring. Are you keeping it cold or outside?
@Frankenstank It is inside, but right by the back door so it can feel the change in temperature ❄ I'm not sure if I should cut them down... I know they're supposed to be dormant right now, but I hate cutting down living plants without a good reason! 😕
@aes239 As far as I know, it needs to be outside or in the fridge to start dormancy. I believe they can withstand snow and stuff. Mine has been outside in freezing temps (no snow though). It is probably too late to start dormancy this year and I would just wait until next year.
@aes239 I wouldn't cut it back though unless the pitchers are dead. I only trim off dead flytraps when they turn black.
@Frankenstank Yeah idk, its previous owner said that moving it somewhere darker and cooler should make it begin dormancy, but it hasn't yet... Our winter weather so far has been pretty random, so maybe it's confused!
Hmm. If you don't put it in the fridge I've read it still needs sun. Mine gets full sun all day. I'll upload a pic of it now do you can see the comparison. You should check on Reddit.com/r/savagegarden They really helped me.
Also, what kind of water are you giving it @aes239 ?
@Frankenstank We buy bottled distilled water specially for this plant, lol... we accidentally killed a couple sundews last year, so won't be making that mistake again!
@Frankenstank and thank you, I will definitely check out that site! 🙂

Wow, she is a beautiful healthy one!
@lovestogarden Thanks 😊 we just got her last month & were told they should start becoming dormant around October... but she still seems wide awake, so far!
@lovestogarden I guess technically 2 months ago, since it's suddenly November already 😬
@columbiariver We found this one at the local farmers' market... Very unexpected! 🙂
Very unique. Pretty interesting

Matthew just got this little guy last week (never had one before) & is somewhat worried about accidentally killing it... any advice??? @uaskigyrl @toddbrandino or anyone else w/ #pitcherplant experience
I reeeeeeally want one of these. Did you order it online?
Only distilled water once a week or so. Also, place on top of a plate of water for more humidity
@SikoMa We actually got it from a local guy who sells plants (usually succulents, air plants, bonsai) at the weekly farmers market here in town! He recently added a few carnivorous plants to the inventory 😍 so of course we impulsively bought one, lol ...even though we were totally clueless as to what sort of care it requires 😬
What a lovely find. Keep us posted on what you learn please.
@SikoMa But according to guy who sells them... right now is NOT the best time to purchase one, since they become dormant for the winter, generally starting in October (obviously Matt ignored this perfectly logical advice & bought it anyway)
@uaskigyrl Thanks 😊 we've heard about the distilled water before & the plate seems like a really good idea!
The good thing is these are pretty hardy and should come back year after year and you can enjoy the flowers and even divide and make multiple plants after a while so very good investiment im hoping this is what my sarracenia will look like when it gets a bit older and some bigger leaves
You have an amazing collection of indoor plants 😍👌
Whoa girl! 😍👏👍
Find info on the Internet. That's what I do! Good luck with your new friend!
@jeatacake Thank you 😊 it gives me plenty of 'gardening' to keep me busy (& happy) thru the winter, when it gets too cold for most of the outdoor plants here ❄
Babies 😊 #pitcherplant #carnivorousplants
I love these😍
A plant that eats meat...what's not to love :)
I started growing one for the first time. Mine started from roots so not much of a pitcher yet. Where do you keep yours? Indoors or outdoors?
@PamelaKay It is inside, but only because of the weather here... If we lived somewhere warmer, it'd probably prefer to be outside ☺️
I live in Texas. It's 80's outside right now and will get over 100 degrees in the summer. My worry here is it being soooooooo hot.
@PamelaKay I'm not sure they would mind the heat, I think they might actually enjoy it!
Thanks! I moved them outside in the shade for now so they can adjust.
@PamelaKay Sounds like a good idea! Good luck with them ☺️
