@gjones. Our winters vary a lot. Last winter we went into negative temps. Mine is part shade. The clematis loves sun but the roots like shade. My blue light clematis is my newest clematis, got it last year. And it is my biggest one. It has grown much faster then the others. But it is plant behind a tree stump. So the roots are mostly shaded. But the plant gets lots of sun. It is possible that where you are it might need full sun.
