Lovely Mo 😊 - whilst I was pottering around the garden yesterday I found an old potentilla that I'd thought was dead and I never got round to removing it but it's sprung to life. I still need to get rid or move as its really in the wrong place but I thought perhaps I might take some cuttings. I don't think it would survive a move as its very lopsided 🤔
@richard.spicer.7906 Seem to be quite easy to root I have taken cuttings over the years of all these 4 & now have 1 of each in top&bottom garden. They give such good value flowering for Sometimes 4/5 months depending on the weather.Tolerate good haircut I've done it a few times but of course you sacrifice all over show of flowers for next year. They do flower but not on mass until 2nd year.Great for filling a hole in a big garden.I would take cuttings&prune shrub to shape. Insurance!
Well @richard.spicer.7906 There's the best time to take cuttings and then there's Mo time.Experts would argue that the best time to take cuttings for speedy growth is softwood cuttings in Spring & early Summer but I tend to take them later on it may take longer to root but I find they have a bigger chance of taking & you've no worries about keeping them watered as they overwinter themselves.I would probably take mine in early Sept. They still have time to set down roots before winter sets in.
Excellent - thanks Mo, that works for me as hopefully will I'll have a bit more space and a greenhouse by then and a little more organised too. It's all a bit chaotic at the moment. I've got a few plants that I divided about 2-3 months ago and I've just not got round to doing anything with them. Need a few weeks off work I think 😳

Of course! I should do both. Will definitely give it a go. When do you think is the best time to take cuttings?
