Fatsia japonica 'Variegata'

Hello lovely and wise GT’ers 😊please can you help me identify this plant? We have been given it by an elderly friend who doesn’t know what it is! Also any care instructions gladly received as it didn’t look too good initially so I cut it right back! New leaves at base look super healthy. Wondering about chopping off the upper section though which appears to be dead? 🤔
