When I'm not on my bike, you'll find me in my organic-ish garden in #Cumbria. Favourite plants? Wisteria, hellebores, peonies, philadelphus...

Actinidia deliciosa syn. Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa

When the owner of Inglefield Plants in Staveley told me not to worry and this kiwi vine was self-fertile and I would definitely get #kiwifruits he never told me how many.... If I picked them all I would have at least 6 baskets full #kiwi #actinidia-deliciosa in #Cumbria #ikidyounot #gyo

It is outside growing against a southwest facing wall so warmer than elsewhere in the garden but also gets all the wind 🥝 Funnily enough I think this variety might be called ‘Jenny’ as apparently it’s the only self-fertile hardy variety 😊 @thehardygardener

There I was at the top of the ladder cutting the #kiwi off the drainpipe and then I spotted this nest and came straight back down again. Does anyone know what bird made it? #wildlifewednesday

They look very similar to a finches egg, possibly Goldfinch . Lines its nest with moss and wool, hair.. Their eggs are about 20mm with markings similar to what i can see. Should see activity to identify soon..

Thanks for that Mark. The nest certainly looks like the goldfinch one. The eggs were very small but I agree they’re very similar. I’m not going to be going up there again soon but will try and watch from the ground and see what visits 👀 @solly1961

18 January 2018 • I kid you not! Just wish I’d harvested them before they froze - I just didn’t believe they’d be so delicious. OK they’re only the size of a large cherry tomato but hey, it’s a kiwi! 😊🥝🥝🥝😊

Had a look at it and wondered where you have it as it’s only just frost hardy, and wow, does it get big!! 😍😍

7w

awomanonabike

Exactly! I don’t know if you remember but as you come into the yard if you’d turned left there was a barn on your left? It’s growing up the gable end wall so gets lots of wind and rain but is south facing. The blueberries are in pots underneath. As for getting big, it seems to have liked being pruned 😂😂 @pelly

I am very excited. We've had it a few years and left it to do its own thing. Had to cut it back a bit earlier in the year and seems that did the trick, as it benefits from regular pruning 🤔 So it's more by luck than judgement 😂 @pelly @LyndaClack @jonners73

I have more hope now, had a Jenny for 9 years, no flowers, but moved so getting much more sun, next year maybe. How hard did you prune it?

7w
comment
awomanonabike

Some long shoots were pruned back almost to the main stem Aly. The attached task on here goes into clear detail about how it 'should' be done. Ours is on a SW facing wall - not protected but very sunny (when the sun shines, that is 😉😂) @thehardygardener
