This hasn’t been doing well so I have moved it a couple of feet away from the shelter of the summerhouse. I’m hoping it was just too dry there 🤔 #iris-foetidissima

I have loads of these in my garden and most seem to be in flower right now - it’s been so dry - so I guess they like it hot and dry!

Mine flowered for the first time ever this year!

It’s not just the lack of flowers but they seem to be shrinking 🤷♀️😂@sharonhayden

I look forward to mine flowering - one day! Actually it’s the seed heads I’m really looking forward to 😊 @malcolmhillen

Have a look at the pic on my profile Jacqueline; the plant also produces long grasses but not sure of their significance @awomanonabike

Thanks Malcolm. I’ve had a quick scroll and couldn’t find it. Please could you tag me in it so I can see what you mean? 🤔 @malcolmhillen

@awomanonabike just done 😉

I think as they’re native they should just reproduce- maybe one of your garden visitors is eating the roots??

That is also possible Sharon. There is a little run under the stones next to where it was, but it was also so near the summerhouse that it was under the overhang. Either way it wasn’t happy 🤔 @sharonhayden

Hope it feels better soon 🤓

Thanks. Me too (It’ll probably take over now 🙄) @sharonhayden

10 Jan 19 • What perfect timing! I ordered this (along with some eucomis) in December and it arrived this morning. I was inspired by seeing it growing in a friend’s garden and then on here. The first new plant in my new bed 💚 #iris-foetidissima

Thank you Sarah. Do you remember ID’ing this for me when it was growing in my friend’s garden I think I’m looking forward to the berries as much as the flowers ❤️@sieveheadsarah

Why is it called stinking? Is it like that cabbage plant that looks lovely but smells vile?

Apparently the leaves smell when crushed but I haven’t noticed. This is an article about them that @sieveheadsarah posted a while back https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/3293722/In-focus-Iris-foetidissima.html @itstillhelen

Does it really stinks...??

Haha! No Shaz, well not much anyway ⬆️ @shaz831

Interesting name though 😁😁😁

Oh yes I do remember, it looks like a nice healthy chunk they sent you, I hope it flowers for you this year 😀👍🏼😀

Good name, I had to read it twice😃

It looks great doesn’t it. Hard to believe it was squished in the middle of the cardboard box (bottom right) with the ‘fragile’ sticker on it 😃 @sieveheadsarah

It’s also known as the roast beef plant 😉😂 @shaz831 @Denise16

Oh blimey, good job it didn't mind being squished 😂😂
Growing at the side of the road in Kentmere Valley #cumbria 💚 #helleborus-foetidus
Scary name, but I like the flowers. Those dark green leaves below them make a great #foil 💚
😂 No it doesn’t win the prettiest name competition does it but it is a lovely plant IMO @novicegardenlover
My mum has a couple of these hellebores but I’ve never got close enough to smell them 😂. They do look lovely though.
To be honest, I’ve never noticed an offensive smell. I have one in the garden, or should say had. Not sure if it will come back after you know who did some tidying up 🙄😬 @pelly
Oh dear 😂
