28 May 2019 • Is it just me? I find it so hard to prune away so much of the vine, especially the trusses, even though I know it means more and bigger grapes. It’s like thinning the veg seedlings... #toughlove #butimagardenwimp
😱 Oh no! That completely defeats the purpose Laura 😂 Better luck this year 🍇🍇🍇 @columbiariver
Good luck! @columbiariver
Oh absolutely not Jacqui. I had one in my old garden and I found it so hard to prune back enough!
It just seems ... wrong @valjones-hughes
It always looks so brutal, but I guess it has to be done Jacqueline 🍇🍇
I hate doing it. It’s almost as bad as thinning the peaches, which is so bad I don’t do it 😂🤣 @pelly
So you get grapes but you don't get peaches? 😂😂
We do get bigger grapes now I do this and actually the peaches are already pretty good and nature does its own pruning with the ‘June drop’ so I just leave it to nature 😉 @pelly
That sounds sensible to me but I'm still getting my head round growing flowers never mind fruit 😱😂
😂😂 There is no end to it all Jane @pelly

And for once, we're not going to be on holiday when they ripen 😀
Lovely bunch!
Wonderful.
Wow 👏👏👏
And there's more than one Matt 🙄😊 @mattfeaton
It's very exciting James @fisherman
Thanks Julie. It's taken many years for me to finally appreciate that it's worth pruning it really hard... 🍇🍇🍇 @juliesgarden
Wow very impressive 👏👏👏😍
That's amazing 😵 my dad will be jealous! 😆
Thanks Pauline 😊😊 @pauline33
Thanks Ash. Does your Dad have a grape vine? @daisyrozanne
Good looking bunch. Well done!

I think I have finally learnt that it is worth removing some of the bunches to get bigger grapes. I have also cut back all of the shoots to two leaves beyond a truss 👏🏻
Yes it took me a while to learn that lesson too 😊
And I'm no good at thinning vegetables! 😂😂 @katgreen
I'm sure it will be fine! They are so robust 👍🏻 @columbiariver
@columbiariver I cut mine right back a few yrs ago and it did it the world of good 😊
@awomanonabike I'm no good at thinning anything, I even leave the weeds when I know I shouldn't but just to be sure it's not a plant in disguise 😄😅😆
@katgreen I'm the same Kathryn but I'm getting better...
Do Laura. It won't do it any harm. If you want fruit cut out all but two of the shoots from each knobbly bit. Leave one to grow & cut the other back to about 6 leaves. If they flower, cut back to two leaves above the bottom truss & cut any other trusses off. If they don't flower just cut right back to two leaves...I hope that makes sense!! @columbiariver
You're welcome Laura. Fingers crossed @columbiariver
Good advice. It does pay off, otherwise the vine just keeps growing!
Thanks Liam. I've only realised in the last few years what a difference it makes @Opuntia

One of my favourite greenhouse jobs. After pruning the vine you then scrape the stems of old bits of bark to get rid of all the nooks and crannies that mealybugs and other pests would otherwise hide in. 😊
That looks like a mature plant 😊 I've just bought my first grape vine
Oh how exciting! Yes it is probably about 15 years old I think. Do you have a greenhouse or conservatory for it? @kimmy01
#vine #grapevine
Yes @awomanonabike I have a greenhouse and a conservatory I'm just deciding where to put it 😊🍇
I don't know whether you need or want any advice but if you do... I'd recommend putting it where you can plant it outside and put the main stem through a hole in the wall. That works really well & means you don't have to water it, at least not once it is established. Good luck @kimmy01
That's a really good idea, in not sure what the other half would think though 😂 I'll see what he says
Thank you 🍇
You're welcome! Tell them it will be worth it for the grapes & wine 🍷 🍇 🍷 @kimmy01

Oops! Thinning fruit should be done - but never is by me! This has meant the weight of the grapes has pulled the vine off the roof of the greenhouse. Hey ho!
That's exactly what happened to mine a few weeks ago. The greenhouse is like as disaster zone now 😕
The books tell you to prune individual bunches but I have a life! Anyway, they taste great. Hope yours do too? 🍇=😊 @jeatacake
Looks so good 😀👍🌿
Taste good too but we can't get through them all, even though we are giving them away. Shame you're so far away @plants 🌏
I had enough of the grapevine. It simply isn't worth the space it takes up, so it had to go!
😲 That is so sad! I'm not very good at getting rid of plants that have outlived their usefulness. Nor at adding @jeatacake to my posts at the time either 😂😂😂
I did notice! But better late than never 😉

Argh! It’s taking over… ✂️ ✂️✂️ and then there was light ☀️☀️☀️#vitisvinifera
Wow
Yes, that’s what I thought 😳 @charlotte
Oh heck 😳. You'd think it would be counter productive to cut them back wouldn't you. I know the reasoning but.......🤔
You’d think so but if we want nice, juicy grapes we have to be brutal!! I don’t normally have to be quite as brutal but I’m not on top of things this year 🙄 @pelly
Oh how fabulous…..I tried it once…..say no more 🫢 good luck 🤞🏼
Oh dear Elaine 🤔 Several hours later and I emerged 😥 @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom
I can imagine 😆 think of the wine 🍷
I’m drinking it!! 🍷 I’ll just be eating the grapes though. Best leave the wine making to the pros @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom
Wish mine were seedless- I made a mistake there!
This is seedless…apparently…but still has seeds 🙄 @sharonhayden
Whatttt???? I’d complain to trades descriptions 🤪
