When I'm not on my bike, you'll find me in my organic-ish garden in #Cumbria. Favourite plants? Wisteria, hellebores, peonies, philadelphus...

Oh heck 😳. You'd think it would be counter productive to cut them back wouldn't you. I know the reasoning but.......🤔

You’d think so but if we want nice, juicy grapes we have to be brutal!! I don’t normally have to be quite as brutal but I’m not on top of things this year 🙄 @pelly

28 May 2019 • Is it just me? I find it so hard to prune away so much of the vine, especially the trusses, even though I know it means more and bigger grapes. It’s like thinning the veg seedlings... #toughlove #butimagardenwimp

I hate doing it. It’s almost as bad as thinning the peaches, which is so bad I don’t do it 😂🤣 @pelly

So you get grapes but you don't get peaches? 😂😂

6w

awomanonabike

We do get bigger grapes now I do this and actually the peaches are already pretty good and nature does its own pruning with the ‘June drop’ so I just leave it to nature 😉 @pelly

I think I have finally learnt that it is worth removing some of the bunches to get bigger grapes. I have also cut back all of the shoots to two leaves beyond a truss 👏🏻

Do Laura. It won't do it any harm. If you want fruit cut out all but two of the shoots from each knobbly bit. Leave one to grow & cut the other back to about 6 leaves. If they flower, cut back to two leaves above the bottom truss & cut any other trusses off. If they don't flower just cut right back to two leaves...I hope that makes sense!! @columbiariver

One of my favourite greenhouse jobs. After pruning the vine you then scrape the stems of old bits of bark to get rid of all the nooks and crannies that mealybugs and other pests would otherwise hide in. 😊

8w

awomanonabike

I don't know whether you need or want any advice but if you do... I'd recommend putting it where you can plant it outside and put the main stem through a hole in the wall. That works really well & means you don't have to water it, at least not once it is established. Good luck @kimmy01

Oops! Thinning fruit should be done - but never is by me! This has meant the weight of the grapes has pulled the vine off the roof of the greenhouse. Hey ho!
