I'm mostly into cacti, aloes, and other heat tolerant succulents, and more recently hoyas and some tropicals. Phoenix, AZ. USDA zone 9b, heat zone 11.

WAY past due for a re-pot, but it hasn't been a priority. 😅 The bit at the bottom was growing down the drain hole. Cramped roots aside, can anyone give me some advice on spider plants? I can keep them alive and growing, but they all look so mediocre! I have several (mostly variegated ones) in various soil mixes and getting varying amounts of light. One in particular blooms and offsets readily, so I guess it's happy, but they all look super pale and sparse and anemic. Tips? 🤷🏻‍♀️

They do well in nice, rich, almost swampy-wet soil. That's what makes them really fill out...

That’s looks so funny “growing out the hole”. It’s a perfect cylinder. 😂 🌞

@emch I have a couple that actually started to get leaf rot bc I was apparently keeping them so swampy. I don't remember the soil composition, though.. 🤔 Maybe not nutrient rich enough? I may have potted them during my coco coir phase, and that stuff is kind of nutrient-less.

@sunlovin It is! 😂 That's exactly why I thought it warranted a photo. It was in a tiny handmade pot with a very thick bottom (you can swipe over to the older pic to see it, if you're interested).

Time for a re-pot! The roots are trying to escape through the drain hole. I think it needs to live outdoors bc it's a little pale. The pot was from a school fundraiser sale, made by an art student. It came with a baby agave victoriae reginae in it for $5. #dealofthecentury

Oh yeah! I remember that cool pot. I was going to suggest fertilizer to liven it up and pot bounding for babies. 😁 🌞

@sunlovin I thought of fertilizing after having finished repotting it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm so used to dealing with cacti and plants that don't need much fertilizer! 😅 I'll mix some slow release pellets into the topsoil. I'm hoping the increased root space and fresh soil will encourage greening and new growth! 🤞

If you’re hand watering your plants, I always mix in Miracle Grow in the little square carton with the watering. It’s fast and easy. I’ve been using it since February. It gets absorbed into the plant immediately, so you get fast results. I sound like the commercial. 😂🌞
