My Ferocactus acanthodes seedling has another set of vibrant new needles! Taken with a #macro lens.
Yikes, #wickedspines
Shoot, I know what I’m photographing tomorrow...your cacti germinated btw!
@mauspad sweeeeet, I'm so glad! I'm always worried I'm going to be like "Bruh, these seeds are CHOICE," and send them to someone, and then they do NOTHING. I just started all of yours today, so hopefully soon! 🤞
@beatnikcrab oooh I’ll check it out! If I like it I might end up migrating completely— I actually kind of hate the social aspect of this app. Are you on Instagram by any chance? I’m on there most often with the same username
Lol oops replied to the wrong comment. I mean plant collector
@mauspad no worries, I gotchu. Nope, I'm not on Insta. This app is my only social media for now.

My lone baby ferocactus acanthodes #grownfromseed #grownfromseed-cacti has its first red needles! Seeded & sprouted in Oct 2020. Photo was taken with a clip-on macro lens, as the little guy isn't quite 1/4” tall.
Omg so cute
Awww the little ones are so cute!💕🌞
When you blow up this picture, do you see the little juicy dots on top? I’ve noticed them on my baby Lithops too. I wonder what the story is behind it?🤔🌞
@sunlovin yes, I don't know what it's called or have any scientific insight to exact function, but I've noticed it on various cacti and succulents, most notably delosperms and echeveria agavoides. The common theme, now that I think about it, was that all of them have been extremely (even excessively) hydrated, which makes me suspect that the juicy, crystalline appearance is due to fluid-storing cells being engorged to the point that they can be seen with the naked eye. Just a guess! 🤷🏻♀️
I found the answer-One of these adaptations is the presence of modified, single-celled, nonglandular trichomes called epidermal bladder cells (EBC) that line the stem, leaves, and flower buds of the plant. These globular, balloon-like cells play an important role for the accumulation of sodium. -copied from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6001328/ . It gets pretty scientific, your explanation was much simpler. 😊
@sunlovin hold up, so if I'm reading this correctly the enlargement of these cells is in response to excess sodium levels in the plant's environment? Crap, I wonder if that's something I should be worried about. 🤔 I wouldn't even know how to reduce it!
The way I read it, it helps the plant deal with high light levels, salinity in soils and periods of drought. I have an ice plant that’s loaded with them on the outside, and that’s what gives it it’s “ice” look.
@sunlovin OMG! I never put together that that's why it's called ice plant! 🤣 Ok so it's not necessarily only a reaction to salt. I only read small excerpts of the page for now, but I kept it open to read more thoroughly later. Good find, thank you for sharing that btw! ☺️👍
Now I don’t have to stare at my plants and wonder “Why does it look like that? 😂

Y'all want some seeds??? 😂 Seriously, I've got a ton from both Ferocactus wislizeni and another mystery Fero (latispinus maybe). Trade me something fun!

Another neighborhood ferocactus that I collected some seeds off of. I'm 95% sure this one is a f. wislizeni.

Found this ferocactus in my neighborhood and collected some seeds pods. Maybe f. latispinus? 🤷🏻♀️ The red needles get bleached out in the sun around here, and this one is living in fuuuuull sun!

I misted all my seedlings, and liked how the water droplets looked on my baby ferocactus, so out came the macro lens for a photo! 😆
Great photo👍 #macro #upclose
@crabby58 thanks! And thanks for the tags. I always forget them! 😅
Beautiful 📷❤️
My first thought when I saw this picture was, there's no dew in Arizona! Lol
@lovestogarden thank you! ☺️ @lesliecole49 yeah, not like this, for sure! 😂
Cool shot !! 😍
@sherrisgarden thank you! 😁
Very welcome 😀
