#macro flower close-up! My blooming Echinopsis was swarming with bees yesterday, but I haven't seen a single pollinator interested in these flowers. 🤷🏻♀️ Might be a good candidate for hand pollination.
Yes, try it and see if you get seeds. 😁🌞
@sunlovin they closed up before I got a chance today, so I hope the flowers reopen for another day or two. 🤞 I wonder what the natural pollinators are, if not bees. 🤔
Yeah, darn, that does happen, hope you get another chance. 🌞

I was surprised to find this flowering today! The buds developed SO FAST! I'd literally taken a progress photo 2 days ago thinking it would still be a week or two. 😳 Tbh I'm kind of disappointed at the flower color. The outside of the buds looked orange, so that's what I was hoping for. Most of my Mammillarias bloom this color, and my bougainvillea as well, so I kind of feel like everything around my patio blooms hot pink. 😕 Still pretty, though! And it complements the pot nicely. 👌🙂
That is fast
Pretty! And I have lots of orange and yellow, so looking for more pink. 😊🌞
Looks great to me. 🤩

I'm pretty sure these are flower buds forming under the needles..? 🤷🏻♀️
#wickedspines
They’ll have to make their way through the spines. 😂🌞
@sunlovin I assume they'll manage, but I'm definitely going to track their progress, for curiosity's sake! Btw, I can't remember, were you in the market for a white-spined Echinocactus grusonii? I was at Lowe's today, and they had a ton of them among the small $4ish cacti, mixed in with the yellow-spined ones. If you were looking for one then maybe check a Lowe's or anywhere that carries Altman plants!
I’m not sure. I bought so many I still don’t have ids for all of them. It’s so confusing because they look like one thing, and then I plant it and they change. Or what variety they are. I did go to Lowe’s recently and they had nothing new. I’m trying not to buy the same ones. 😂 I have to wait for a new shipment. I want more Rebutias or Lobivias. But Thanks! 😊
@sunlovin Definitely, I'm in the same boat. Trying to go easy on the duplicates and stick to the new/uncommon stuff. I haven't really seen anything new or especially interesting at any of the big box stores in a good while. 🥱

Got this new addition potted today! I did some research first, and llifle makes it sound especially rot prone, so I packed in a bunch of pumice around the taproot all the way down its length like they suggest. Hopefully they're not leading me astray! 🤞
Looks nice! Where did you get your pumice? 💚🌞
@sunlovin thanks! It was dumb luck! My parents owned a sandblasting company (til they liquidated and retired a few months ago), and their sand supplier once had an entire shipment of 5000 lbs of fine pumice that the buyer flaked on. He needed it gone, so he asked if my dad would take it for free, which he did! So I hauled home as much as I could find containers for. I think I've got about 50 gal worth. Wish I could've taken more! It barely put a dent in the total amount they had.
@sunlovin I've bought coarse pumice from a local nursery before. I think they had fine as well. Pre-covid the local Cactus & Succulent Society sold 5 lb bags of coarse pumice at the meetings for $5, so I bought that there as I needed it. They also organized "pumice pile" (both coarse & fine) events wherein you bring your own bucket & shovel and can take as much pumice as you want for $5/5gal bucket, but they were never in convenient locations for me, so I never went.
Oh, that’s great that you had all those opportunities. Your cactus club sounds like a really good one to belong to. Star nursery has small bags of it pretty resonalbly, I only got 1 in the fall and they’re always out of it because it’s so popular. It’s too expensive online, shipping rocks are heavy. So I bought big bags of small rock at Lowe’s to add to the soil for better drainage.
That's what I'm waiting for to be able to go to Lowe's and buy my garden stuff again, so many great ideas from folks on gardentags😃 @sunlovin @beatnikcrab
@sunlovin I bet they're in Vegas, too! They have chapters everywhere. You don't have to be a member to attend meetings. They're an amazing source of free/cheap rare plants. I'm SO EAGER to start going again once life gets back to normal. 😩
@crabby58 hopefully it stops snowing and warms up for you soon!! 😆 When does spring planting normally begin for you?
Spring here in Pennsylvania is March 20. We plant our tomatoes by Memorial day usually end of May, with the threat of frost gone😃I've noticed, since I've joined gardentags, I am really looking forward to the planting season even more👍@beatnikcrab
Oof, I'm usually splashing around in the pool by Memorial Day! 😂 There's nothing like seeing what other people are doing to get you motivated. 😁
Our Cactus and Succulent society in Vegas folded as of December. They joined with the regular garden club but I’m really only interested in cacti. ☹️
@sunlovin ooh that's right, you did mention that a couple weeks ago. Laaaaame! 😫☹️

#idhelp #cactus-id-help #id-help please! I ordered some stuff from Succulents Depot, and they were out of one thing I ordered. They asked what I wanted as a substitution, and I told them to surprise me. It's a big beauty, but idk what it is! Sulcorebutia, I think, but idk the species. It doesn't match anything on their site. 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks in advance!
If you emailed them a picture do you think they might know and answer?🤔🌞
@sunlovin that was my next plan of attack, but I was hoping someone here might know it, so I tried here first. 😆
Welp, I emailed them and the ID I got was Rebutia steinbachii f. veronikae. Hmm, these needles look a lot more wiry to me, but I guess I'll go with it! 🤨🤷🏻♀️
Another round of blooms on my Rebutia this morning. So bright! 😎 #sunlover
Wow is all I can say 🤩
Nice! I’m glad it’s doing well for you. I’d like to collect more of them. 😍🌞
@philstalder @sunlovin thank you! I definitely wouldn't hesitate to bring home some more Rebutias. 10/10 would recommend.
They seem to flower early too, which is good for me. 😊
@sunlovin TRUTH. ✊
Beautiful flowers!
I’m still learning/evaluating cactus. Another one I’m going to seek out. Thanks 😊
@philstalder I got this one here: https://www.succulentsdepot.com/ but last I checked it wasn't among their available stock. Turned out they were out of one of the things I ordered once, so after some back and forth I told them to just surprise me with a substitution, and this is what they sent. They were very kind and accommodating, so if you email them and ask they may have more in their "secret stock" and be able to oblige.
Thanks I have that site bookmarked. I’m afraid to look at the moment. Haha 😆
