Got my #choisya back in the ground and hoping it can develop healthily now. Itβs in a dreadful state but π€πΌ it will recover from its year in a temporary pot. #aztecgold

Is this the problem one from last year Alison??

Yes @sieveheadsarah π’

Itβs a bit baffling as to why itβs not growing much, fingers cross this will be itβs year ππΌπ

How is this doing Alison?

Very pleased thereβs lots of #newgrowth on my #choisya #aztecgold hopefully it will become bushier 24/05/19 @sieveheadsarah #foliagefriday

Ooh that's looking much better, bet you're glad it's finally happy ππΌπ

That looks much better πππ

@sieveheadsarah Yes Iβm definitely happier with it now π

It does, even though itβs still a bit sparse!! @ublaszko

It's ok, it will fill out but it's starting to recover and that's hopeful π My pots are doing poorly because we haven't had much rain. It's drizzling now so hopefully they will recover. They've gone pale and some yellow but I'm hopeful that adding white vinegar to tap water helps to bring out the green back π₯

I'm having to water my pots too and all my seedlings in the greenhouse! It's taking quite a while each evening!! @ublaszko

Yeah, an hour of my evenings is taken up by watering but I'm more concerned that I have to use tap water. I actually bought a soil pH meter and my pots and my borders are pH 8 π¨ Hopefully, I can work our a way to use white vinegar in the tap water to lower the soil pH because some of my plants are looking very pale. Still flowering but poorly foliage.

@ublaszko @sieveheadsarah Iβve got to dig this back up!!! πππ. My landlord is putting up a conservatory on our house and then move the patio. It means this flower bed will have to go so Iβve got to dig this up, my fuchsia, my red hot pokers and some sedum thatβs all here!! Iβm glad I didnβt get round to planting my seedlings yet!! Going to be lots of disruption for a while!!! π±. But he has said when itβs done, I can add new flower beds ππΌ

Ooh no, be careful with the red hot pokers as they're not keen on being moved, get as much soil around them as you can ππΌππΌππΌ a new conservatory sounds fab though and good that you're able to add a new flower bed, sounds like you've got a great landlord ππ

At least your choisya had w chance to recover. Perhaps you could use the soil it's in for the pot. Conservatory will be great to start your seedlings next year ππ

Thanks @sieveheadsarah hopeful Iβll be able to keep them alive!! @ublaszko yes a conservatory will be good for overwintering plants and starting seeds. Especially as Iβm not sure where Iβm going to be able to relocate my greenhouse! Not too keen on the disruption and hope the rent doesnβt go up afterwards!! ππ

#choisya #aztecgold now planted in the ground. Hopefully happy now. Have a feeling it may have been waterlogged. Hoping roots recover. @sieveheadsarah Well Iβll see how it does now!! 06/05/19

I was only thinking about this this morning, fingers crossed it'll be happy now ππΌ

#choisya #aztecgold flowering. Bless it! Itβs trying to grow new leaves but I think (hope) it will look better when I can get it in the ground #white 30/04/19

My #choisya #aztecgold is really not looking great yet it seems to be putting out flower buds! Anyone any #advice? I reported it at the end of last summer.

@sieveheadsarah This is it!!

Ooh, that's not looking good, maybe feeding it would help, or planting it in the ground but I'm sure you said you couldn't do that π€π€

@sieveheadsarah Iβm wondering if I might have to put it in the ground. Itβs only that I didnβt want to lose it if I had to move but it looks like I might lose it anyway! I might have to make one of my new beds a bit bigger to fit it in with my other plans! Should I put it in a mostly sunny bed (afternoon-evening sun) or early morning sun only and shade rest of day?

I think it'll be much happier in the ground, mine gets the morning sun and is happy and my Mums one gets the afternoon sun, so I think it'll be happy either way ππΌπ

Well Urszula, Iβve done it! @ublaszko Repotted, taken dianthus out and now, hopefully, my #choisya will grow better. Itβll certainly have a lot more root space now! π€πΌπ 07/09/18

@sieveheadsarah Hopefully this will do better now! Although I donβt think it will be flowering again this year!! π

#foliagefriday

It might not do much until the spring but it will have more room to grow roots during autumn and you will get lots of fresh foliage in spring βΊ

Just keep the soil moist until you see new growth (not soggy though) and mulch again in spring before we start to get warm weather (late March/early April) βΊ

Great, thanks for the advice and encouragement! π @ublaszko

Fingers crossed Alison, maybe it'll prefer being on its own π€π€

You're welcome. I just read an article on choisya and they sound similar in many ways to ceanothus. They both like as much sun as they can get and cope well with no fuss. They do need room for root growth so moving dianthus was a good idea π My ceanothus lost quite a bit of leaves during the heatwave but it's in the ground and is a very mature plant so it just drew water deeper down. Yours needs more watering during dry weather because it's in a pot. I'd water it when top of the soil is dry. π

I hope so @sieveheadsarah π

@ublaszko yeah I think that the top always felt dry and possibly becoming a bit mossy, so with fresh compost in, it should do better and I'll keep an eye on it. It is in the sunniest spot possible! Couldn't believe how big the two dianthus actually were to be honest!

My dianthus has doubled if not tripled in size this year. They absolutely loved the heatwave but I think they're now potbound π π I'd make sure to keep the soil arojnd choisya moist at least for another year and then it's a very low maintenance shrub. Here a lot of student houses have them in front gardens because they're such trouble free plants ππ

Does anyone know why my #choisya is looking so sparse. I think it is growing new leaves and it gets the sun for most of the day. I water it if moisture meter reading is low. It just doesn't look very bushy. Is this normal? #help #advice #advice-choisya #AztecGold

@sieveheadsarah so definitely no signs of flowering again!!

Oh, it does look very sad, maybe it needs repotting or going in the ground π€

Are the brown leaves crispy? Do you water it until the water comes out through the drainage hole? Maybe it needs a good soak. Is the soil completely dry when the moisture reading is showing low moisture levels? I haven't had choisya so I'm not sure but it has some brown leaves by the looks of it.

Yes some brown leaves are crispy. It is supposed to have lime green-yellow leaves but so sparse!! I think I will repot it and take out the dianthus that are in the pot with it and then give it a good soak! Thanks @ublaszko and @sieveheadsarah

I was thinking that I'd take out the dianthus but I wasn't sure if it makes sense. It could be that choisya doesn't like competition around the roots but it's more of a hunch on my part. Fresh compost sounds good as it will feed the plant and you can check if the roots look healthy. I'd also check if the soil is not too dry between waterings by hand, it shouldn't feel like dust/bone dry.

Thanks Urszula. When I have a minute, I'll sort it out! @ublaszko

#choisya looks much happier in its new position. Lots of flowers opened. #newgrowth evident. Not had time to check for vine weevils yet. 18/05/18 #AztecGold

This is part of the plant that make some wonder if something is nibbling it. One part has lots of flowers/buds and looks ok. And the third part looks like it has new leaves growing! Just seems a bit confused!? π€·ββοΈ @sieveheadsarah

Could be vine weevil, they take notched out of leaves @bluefox23 Iβve not long puta post about them if you go to my page

@lovemygarden65 I'll have a look out for vine weevils then and see if I can see any. ππΌ

@sieveheadsarah This is my plant. I could plant it in ground but a few issues 1: I'm renting so if I move, I'd have to dig it up to take it with me. 2: The garden only has 1 bed down side of house which I can't see from indoors so trying to fill it with evergreen shrubs that I don't mind not seeing! That is also quite shady. The other 2 beds are in opposite corners and I've filled them with buddleia, foxglove and red pokers!

@Blue fox can you bury the pot. Other option is get Vine Weevil nematodes and water the pots and garden with it. Theyβre pesky little blighters. π€

@pixierose I'll have a look out for them and try and get rid of them if they are the culprit!! ππΌ

Alison I completely get where you're coming from not wanting to plant it if you're renting (I've been there), so, re vine weevils, go out at night with a torch and see if you can see any eating the plant, you can also take the plant out of the pot and have a good look for the vine weevil grubs, if you're careful the plant will be fine and then repot with some new compost. I'm not convinced it'll be vine weevils, I'd say it needs a bigger pot. Let me know what you do and what you find πππΌπ

Thanks @sieveheadsarah Will do. ππΌ Hadn't thought of it needing a new pot! π€¦πΌββοΈ

Good luck and I hope it's not vine weevils!! π€ππΌπ€

#choisya buds developing. Last year flowers didn't amount to much so hoping for better this year. 29/04/18 Choisya #AztecGold

Ah the sent of Orange blossom it's one of my favorites

Needs more Sun for it to Bloom

@gauravsh6 it gets afternoon and evening sun. Is that not enough? Problem is that to give it sun for most of day, would have to put the pot in the middle of the lawn! π

Guess it should grow much better in full Sun. However since it is getting Afternoon Sun hence should be able to show moderate growth. If you put in middle of lawn then protect it from winds π
