Developing my knowledge all the time. I love growing plants: barely any space on my windowsills, nor on my patio as it's full of pots. #renting.

Got my #choisya back in the ground and hoping it can develop healthily now. It’s in a dreadful state but 🤞🏼 it will recover from its year in a temporary pot. #aztecgold

It's ok, it will fill out but it's starting to recover and that's hopeful 😊 My pots are doing poorly because we haven't had much rain. It's drizzling now so hopefully they will recover. They've gone pale and some yellow but I'm hopeful that adding white vinegar to tap water helps to bring out the green back 😥

I'm having to water my pots too and all my seedlings in the greenhouse! It's taking quite a while each evening!! @ublaszko

6w

Yeah, an hour of my evenings is taken up by watering but I'm more concerned that I have to use tap water. I actually bought a soil pH meter and my pots and my borders are pH 8 😨 Hopefully, I can work our a way to use white vinegar in the tap water to lower the soil pH because some of my plants are looking very pale. Still flowering but poorly foliage.

@ublaszko @sieveheadsarah I’ve got to dig this back up!!! 😭😭😭. My landlord is putting up a conservatory on our house and then move the patio. It means this flower bed will have to go so I’ve got to dig this up, my fuchsia, my red hot pokers and some sedum that’s all here!! I’m glad I didn’t get round to planting my seedlings yet!! Going to be lots of disruption for a while!!! 😱. But he has said when it’s done, I can add new flower beds 👍🏼

6w

sieveheadsarah

Ooh no, be careful with the red hot pokers as they're not keen on being moved, get as much soil around them as you can 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 a new conservatory sounds fab though and good that you're able to add a new flower bed, sounds like you've got a great landlord 😀😀

At least your choisya had w chance to recover. Perhaps you could use the soil it's in for the pot. Conservatory will be great to start your seedlings next year 👍👍

Thanks @sieveheadsarah hopeful I’ll be able to keep them alive!! @ublaszko yes a conservatory will be good for overwintering plants and starting seeds. Especially as I’m not sure where I’m going to be able to relocate my greenhouse! Not too keen on the disruption and hope the rent doesn’t go up afterwards!! 😂😂

@sieveheadsarah I’m wondering if I might have to put it in the ground. It’s only that I didn’t want to lose it if I had to move but it looks like I might lose it anyway! I might have to make one of my new beds a bit bigger to fit it in with my other plans! Should I put it in a mostly sunny bed (afternoon-evening sun) or early morning sun only and shade rest of day?

I think it'll be much happier in the ground, mine gets the morning sun and is happy and my Mums one gets the afternoon sun, so I think it'll be happy either way 👍🏼😀

It might not do much until the spring but it will have more room to grow roots during autumn and you will get lots of fresh foliage in spring ☺

6w

Just keep the soil moist until you see new growth (not soggy though) and mulch again in spring before we start to get warm weather (late March/early April) ☺

You're welcome. I just read an article on choisya and they sound similar in many ways to ceanothus. They both like as much sun as they can get and cope well with no fuss. They do need room for root growth so moving dianthus was a good idea 👍 My ceanothus lost quite a bit of leaves during the heatwave but it's in the ground and is a very mature plant so it just drew water deeper down. Yours needs more watering during dry weather because it's in a pot. I'd water it when top of the soil is dry. 👍

6w
comment
bluefox23

I hope so @sieveheadsarah 😊

6w
comment
bluefox23

@ublaszko yeah I think that the top always felt dry and possibly becoming a bit mossy, so with fresh compost in, it should do better and I'll keep an eye on it. It is in the sunniest spot possible! Couldn't believe how big the two dianthus actually were to be honest!

6w
comment
ublaszko

My dianthus has doubled if not tripled in size this year. They absolutely loved the heatwave but I think they're now potbound 😅😅 I'd make sure to keep the soil arojnd choisya moist at least for another year and then it's a very low maintenance shrub. Here a lot of student houses have them in front gardens because they're such trouble free plants 😁😂

Does anyone know why my #choisya is looking so sparse. I think it is growing new leaves and it gets the sun for most of the day. I water it if moisture meter reading is low. It just doesn't look very bushy. Is this normal? #help #advice #advice-choisya #AztecGold

Are the brown leaves crispy? Do you water it until the water comes out through the drainage hole? Maybe it needs a good soak. Is the soil completely dry when the moisture reading is showing low moisture levels? I haven't had choisya so I'm not sure but it has some brown leaves by the looks of it.

6w
comment
bluefox23

Yes some brown leaves are crispy. It is supposed to have lime green-yellow leaves but so sparse!! I think I will repot it and take out the dianthus that are in the pot with it and then give it a good soak! Thanks @ublaszko and @sieveheadsarah

6w
comment
ublaszko

I was thinking that I'd take out the dianthus but I wasn't sure if it makes sense. It could be that choisya doesn't like competition around the roots but it's more of a hunch on my part. Fresh compost sounds good as it will feed the plant and you can check if the roots look healthy. I'd also check if the soil is not too dry between waterings by hand, it shouldn't feel like dust/bone dry.

@sieveheadsarah This is my plant. I could plant it in ground but a few issues 1: I'm renting so if I move, I'd have to dig it up to take it with me. 2: The garden only has 1 bed down side of house which I can't see from indoors so trying to fill it with evergreen shrubs that I don't mind not seeing! That is also quite shady. The other 2 beds are in opposite corners and I've filled them with buddleia, foxglove and red pokers!

@Blue fox can you bury the pot. Other option is get Vine Weevil nematodes and water the pots and garden with it. They’re pesky little blighters. 😤

Alison I completely get where you're coming from not wanting to plant it if you're renting (I've been there), so, re vine weevils, go out at night with a torch and see if you can see any eating the plant, you can also take the plant out of the pot and have a good look for the vine weevil grubs, if you're careful the plant will be fine and then repot with some new compost. I'm not convinced it'll be vine weevils, I'd say it needs a bigger pot. Let me know what you do and what you find 😀👍🏼😀

Guess it should grow much better in full Sun. However since it is getting Afternoon Sun hence should be able to show moderate growth. If you put in middle of lawn then protect it from winds 😊
