There are no flowers coming out of the top at any time, so I am not convinced that it is bee balm from the pictures provided in the encyclopedia. If this helps it spreads by roots/ vines that get very thick and almost wood-like when they go dormant. They are hard to cut down and will give you slivers and poke you without gloves.
Help me identify this plant. Seems like some type of mint, has a sweet lemony smell and the flowers last well into fall
