Could I plant this on a rockery please?
Can you let me know the size and if it's hardy as I'd like to surround the base of a birdbath which catches the sun from 10 till 3 or 4 in the afternoon - thank you
Hi @jpea im afraid this grass is not hardy in the UK. You might get lucky in a mild winter but usually best to treat it as an annual. May be better to consider a dwarf #Miscanthus like "Yakushima Dwarf" although not red, still has a similar effect.
Thank you very much @clockhousenursery I'll certainly look at that as red is not critical but being about 45cm high (grass only not the flower heads) and variegated if possible. The bed will be circular about 1m in dia and 30cm wide or whatever is appropriate for the grass
@Joel ok. Miscanthus may be a bit tall then. Might be better to look at some of the 'evercolour' series of grasses. Not as attractive seed heads though. A lot of the penisetum cultivars are borderline hardy here. #imperata Red Baron may be worth a look too.
