Complete novice between me and my husband. We are guessing and disagreeing with each other on everything. But both ultimately want a garden to enjoy.

I think the top is growing but think the bottom has died again. So letting nature sort it out now. #succulentsunday #succulents @levalar @Muzz67 @cazz47

It's normal for the lower leaves to die off ..just make sure they aren't touching the soil too much especially when you water to prevent rot.The airflow underneath is important 😁

Soo chuffed with this @Muzz67 to think I tried hard with all those other leaves this came off while sorting the roots out again and I just left it on the side. See what happens expecting nothing, then all of a sudden there they were. 😊

@Muzz67 @levalar @cazz47 these are the leaves off the mother plant that had lost its roots. I'm sorry it's taken me a while, I've not been too well. They have pink shoots?coning from them. And are now Sat on little pebbles on top if the soil.

@confusedpossum it's okay I haven't been too active recently either 😊💕 and yup those are roots! I like to just put my props on soil and water every other day til they get big enough to be transferred to a normal pot (which can take a while but it's so worth it watching em' grow up 😊) and then they go on my typical watering schedule

So will these eventually have little succulents growing off them instead of roots kelly? @levalar

7w
comment
levalar

@confusedpossum Yep! As long as they're cared for there's a good chance for them to put out leaves,. Some can take a LONG time to do so, or even dry out, but I had one with a HUGE root system and no leaves for no the and months, repotted it put it in a different location with more light want within a week it put some out 😊

I have had no luck with some echeveria trying to propagate leaves bit others go well .Is this the only one you're trying to propagate and did you get the leaves of cleanly as if you dont hear the little snap sound as a clean removal it can tear and wont ever grow.Ive learnt this the hard way?

7w
comment
confusedpossum

They all came off cleanly as I took them off this so if I didn't rescue the mother I'd have some leaves that I could start again with. I took 13. I think there's 10 left. @Muzz67

I was going to say possibly too much water .The soil looks very composty and not free draining enough ? The water needs to go through quite quickly and dry out almost totally before watering again.Maybe pull all the lower leaves off and repot into some cacti and succulent mix and I put small stones on surface to prevent leaves touching the soil.Your new root growth is a good sign though .Im interested to see how this plant goes Helen ?

Looks good from here. Remember only moist soil and let dry before watering again @confusedpossum

I thought succulents went in free draining soil and only watered as little as once a month or is it because it's being repotted. Other succulents I've done have gone in dry and been growing since. Sorry I'm new to gardening.

@confusedpossum you're right, they do like free draining compost. Sometimes when I'm repotting something, especially if it's fragile, I mist the compost with a spray bottle before planting so the soil is damp but not actually wet. Then let it dry out again before you water. As the root system isn't very big yet, take care when you do water. Their watering needs vary but a good guide is to dip a wooden skewer or a lolly stick into the soil. If it comes out clean, it's time to water.

Thank you @Soph1e it's in and is up on the window ledge with the carpet-echeveria, and baby houseleeks all waiting to dry out before I repot the babies and put them with the mother of thousand babies, and also on the windowledge lol

You probably don't need to wait to pot up the houseleeks. Mine usually go straight in to their new home. The same goes for Mother of Thousands, I just dump them on top of some compost and let them do their own thing.

The mother of thousands went on way weeks ago @Soph1e I'll tag you. I've no idea what I'm going to do with them all. I only live in a 2 bedroom terraced house. Lol

As long as the stem isn't soft as in rotten it should be fine and begin to grow new roots and just water when soil quite dry .Good luck and hope to see progress pics ? 😆

Have you checked the soil for any pests that could have damaged the roots? If the top is healthy you could cut that off and pot it up to grow a new plant.

7w
comment

@Soph1e there was eggs and what looked like little cream woodlice. I got rid of them all today and put it on the pot till I got some advice. There's no root even left in the pot. 😩

7w

Soph1e

Sounds like you have root mealy bugs 😢 I'd save what you can for leaf cuttings and then try cutting the top off, letting it callus over for a few days and then replant it. Check all the plants that have been near it because these nasty little critters spread fast (I'm currently fighting mealy bugs on my cacti so I know the little monsters travel!)

7w
comment
confusedpossum

Oh God. I'll get on it straight after breakfast. I don't know if this is lucky but this pot is the only one we buried amongst the bark for a fair distance. So I'm hoping they don't get in pots. If they've got to any thing else but not done much damage what can I do. And is there a way to stop this happening again @Soph1e?

7w
comment
Soph1e

Some people scrub them off with an old toothbrush, others do a hot water dip or a chemical dip. I'd try and go with removal instead of resorting to chemicals etc I haven't dealt with root mealy bugs before but I've been treating my mealy bugs following these instructions from Succulents and Sunshine https://www.succulentsandsunshine.com/kill-mealybugs-on-succulents/ fingers crossed that the rest of your plants are untouched!

7w
comment
moore.794

If you have mealy bugs you can see them. Most likely just root rot. Carefully remove rotted parts Nd dry before re potting. Suculents should not be placed in bark to much moisture. Use a well drained cactus mix. If see insects thoroughly clean and repot to grow new roots @confusedpossum

7w

Thank you @moore.794 they're not in bark. Tjeu really potted in a cactus mix then bark is around the pot. X

If clay pot will not be able to evaporate moisture if buried in bark. Plastic holds moisture not good for suculents. @confusedpossum

Could even be vine weevil larvae. Did you see any white grubs in the soil ? They eat through the roots ? Let it dry out a bit and repot in fresh soil .Dont give water for a while and it should put out new roots looking for water .

@confusedpossum Helen as @Muzz67 says! Just check the soil luv and any white grubs are vine weevil larvae 😡 dispose of carefully don't just chuck it on your garden ! Vile creatures! Pull off lower leaves gently so you leave a little stem and let plant dry for a few days then just pot it in some dry free draining compost and gradually give it just a tablespoon of water in about 3 wks from planting. Should soon root !. Use leaves you've pulled off for propagating as long as they're still firm 😊

The fact it looks like that (gorgeous😍) and there's no sign of decay id say vine weevil defo the problem Helen! It could have been sat like it for months cos as you know succ's can go for ages without water so it won't have done actual plant any harm just the roots! Any other plant would have wilted and popped it's clogs long ago! @confusedpossum 😁

I'm going to try and sort it out today. Then tomorrow a trip to the garden centre for cactus soil, grass feed and thickener. Hopefully with a few leaves taken off today and a few days inside to dry out and I can save it. If I can bring back a dahlia I'm hopeful for this. 😀 thank you @cazz47, @Soph1e and @Muzz67 for your help once again.
