@edward thanks Edward. The fence was green in the spring, and it didn't stand out well at all. Painted it the darker colour , and bingo 🤗

@sieveheadsarah hi Sarah, you basically wait until jan/Feb when the tree is dormant, lift it from the pot and quietly cut back the outer roots, clear off the old compost and repot it. I used a mixture of ericaceous compost and John innes no 3. It promotes fresh growth, and has worked brilliantly.

8w
comment
sieveheadsarah

Fab, thanks @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co I'll do my best to remember to do that to mine in Jan/Feb.

8w
comment
davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co

@sieveheadsarah I'd only do it if you want to keep it in the same size pot Sarah. The one I've got I've had for 15 years and wasn't cheap when I got it. If you can go for a bigger pot then I'd just repot it.

Hi @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co yes u can trim straggly roots but not t main roots, trimming helps but a wee feed after too, hope that helps

8w

Are you potting it into a bigger pot? If so I'd keep them. If you're using the same pot again you could trim them and add some fresh compost

8w

davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co

@susieg same pot. @thehardygardener thanks. I thought it would be ok but not 100%.

This winter I'd like to repot this maple, I've had it for 15 years. I've read that it would benefit from having the outer roots cut back to promote new growth. Any advice on this please ?

Just had a Google Dave as I need to repot both of mine in the Spring... It doesn't say anything about trimming the roots on the RHS, Gardeners World or a couple of other sites I normally look on 🤔 I'd be interested to know too if anyone knows 😊 #advice #Acer #repotting

8w

@rachelbrooks I'm sure I've read somewhere that if your keeping them in the same size pot it does them good, but to do it over winter whilst their dormant. Perhaps @mikethegardener my now ?

Oh right 👍🏼 I will be putting mine in bigger pots (they've been in the same little pots since I got them!)
