I think it's normal they have flowers on top of the flower spike but they should have twice as many on a mature plant. Having said that, nothing is normal about this year. 😰

Oh really! It was a new suprise this year cos I didn't plant it. I thought my black hollyhock had self seeded and changed colour 🤔 @ublaszko

I think it's the same plant family. I always mixed up the two and malva as well. I think all three self-seed quite readily so perhaps the seeds came in a pot with another plant or got blown in from your neighbours. I'm pretty sure this one is lavatera as I had my eye on one this summer and I'm planning to buy it in the spring.
