I think it's some sort of edible beet but haven't been game to try it yet. It is very attractive but I'd like to know if I can eat it.

The plant is just shooting to seed now and there doesn't appear to be any bulb or significant root to show. When I pick the leaves I get a red staining on my hands as you would with beetroot. (Not sure how to add another photo on this feed)

Thank you. Now I have to decide whether to keep it or dig it out. Are there any practical uses for it or is the compost the best option. I'm worried now that if it goes to seed u may never get rid of it. I only have a small garden and try to make all space useful.

You can find lots of info from Google. It is a very striking plant. It would come down to what you want for your space.Never grown it myself, sorry @gaylark.
