I recently learned that some plants (redbud is one of them, so are black locust and red and white clover) store (they "fix") nitrogen in little knobs (called nodules) in their roots. By accumulating nitrogen in the soil, it's like creating fertilizer that other nearby plants can benefit from. Pawlonia trees do this, many plants in the lupin and legume families do this too, so if you plant them strategically you can use nitrogen-fixing plants as living mulch. Chop and drop in place.
