An absolutely favourite at this time of year; Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii 'Profusion' Plentiful clusters of bright purple berries from mid autumn - well deserving of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
It's lovely brought one yesterday
Beautiful definitely going 2 get one luv the colour x 😊
@hilliergardencentres love this. I have had one for a few years but it doesn't produce berries. Is it true that you need more than one for them to flower well?
@hilliergardencentres - What can you do with them? Are they ornamental only, or do they have uses? (Food, dying, etc.). What zone are they best in? 🌴🌺🐾
@Williamson great choice!
@euphorbia it's not necessarily that you need more plants. It could be a number of things stopping the berries. These love sunshine so it might be position. They also don't need to be over fed or they'll get a little lazy with fruiting. It could also be pruning related. They flower very late and it's the flowers that lead to the fruit. February is the best time to prune, if you're doing it another time of year that could impact berry production. Hope one of those helps!
@cschulz02 to best of our knowledge ornamental only - even during travels in its native Japan we've not come across another use yet! (The birds love eating the berries, mind ...)
@hilliergardencentres - Thank you very much for the info. They are lovely! They look like they might be helpful for crushing & dying at least, but I certainly will accept your expertise on them. Thanks again! Glad they feed the birdies! 🌴🌺🐾

The outstanding colours of nature: the vibrant purple berries of Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion' are paintbox bright.
Love the vibrant colour 💜💜💜
@hilliergardencentres does callicarpa grow alright in a shaded area?

@harebell as long as it's not deep shade you should be ok. It prefers sun to partial shade but is also pretty hardy and can cope with north facing or exposed spots. So if there's a bit of sun (which helps the flowers grow in summer and in turn produces the amazing purple berries) you'll be fine.
I'll post a picture of were I plan to place it,and is it right that for the berries to keep coming you have to have 2 shrubs both from a different batch?
@harebell if you have space, then planting more than one will improve pollination & winter performance.
Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii ‘Profusion’ A magnificent deciduous shrub with green leaves that have a purple tint before it colours in the autumn from green to a rosy shade. The real showstopper is the stunning metallic purple berries produced in an abundance in autumn, making it a focal point in the garden.
