A beginner learning about horticulture. I work in a garden centre and am slowly growing my own collection. Any tips will be a huge help! Thanks

So the one that was miles further on than the others has now flowered 😄🌸! I have figured that some of the rest weren't growing because a few bulbs have gone soft and rotten from the inside out 😔😓. On a good note, at least I've caught it before it spreads to my other bulbs (especially ones in the same pots!) so now I'll be keeping a close eye on them. And at least these look beautiful now 😍😁 #bulbs #narcissus #flowering

It could the pests that @richard.spicer.7906 found in his daffs last year. He might be able to tell you what it is.

I have had to spray my other houseplants after being taken over by tiny black flies with white maggots in the roots of some of my plants @ublaszko @richard.spicer.7906 after they'd killed one of my plants. No signs of them now but it could be linked, yeah 😵

The tiny black flies with maggots are Fungus gnats (or Sciarid Flies) - usually appear when damp compost is around. I’m currently plagued with them but yellow sticky traps designed for Aphids/Whitefly in greenhouses are good solution. I’ve stuck some to the inside of one of my propagators

And they will be back - eggs will have been laid in the soil. The bulbs on the other hand, possibly due to a much bigger issue. Do you still have the bulbs? Cut them open and see what’s inside. If it’s brown horrible gunk then yes may have been what I had in September #narcissusbulbfly

Thanks @richard.spicer.7906 , and yeah. The whole bulb was just brown sludge inside, with the outer layers looking normal. Hopefully it won't affect the others 😰

Ah, too bad. Hopefully what’s left will come good. I’ve just realised as well that this bulb may not be the variety on the packet, which might explain why it was miles ahead of the others - I think Grand Soleil d’or is yellow rather than white. Maybe there was a stowaway in the packet 😂

I did think it might be a random one @richard.spicer.7906 yeah, because they were leftovers from work doing the "bag your own" and "cram a pot" offers; so people could swap bulbs really easily..and it's quite hard to tell if they have 🙄🙃

One bulb that's really going for it! Anyone know what's happening here? 🙄 Why has one grown so quickly, when the others have hardly grown at all? 🤔 Also, will this larger one bloom way before the other four now? 😕😒 #odd #narcissus #bulbs #uneven

How strange 🧐 I can only guess that the roots may have formed quicker on this one than the other three, so it’s shot away. Hopefully the others will catch up soon. Try turning the pot round a half or quarter every day to ensure each side gets equal amounts of light over the week.

I'd say the roots of that bulb are definitely more developed, yes. When looking over the pot today, there are roots coming out of the drainage holes directly below that bulb. I've been turning it (and actually moving their position around a little while I find the right spot in the room for them 😬) but I will continue and hope the others catch up. Thank you @richard.spicer.7906

I got given these bulbs for free (I have a LOT of them) so have put them into all sorts of different pots to experiment with what might look nice 😄. The label said "Indoor Narcissus, Grand Soleil D'or" but it doesn't come up with anything like that in the plant finder 😪. So it's not an "unknown variety" but it will have to do! #bulbs #narcissus #indoor-narcissus #freebie

That’s a valid variety! And a nice one too! I bought some of those last year but I’ve been plagued with dreaded #narcissusbulbfly this year, lost most of them 😓 - I thought there was an entry, let me check. If not, we can create one!

Ah, just realised I never posted mine last year so never added to the database 🤦🏼‍♂️ - here’s a link though from the American daffodil society. It’s a #heritagedaffodil so predates 1940 😄 https://daffseek.org/detail-page/?cultivar=Grand%20Soleil%20d%27Or&auto=1

Damn pests, at least you still have some? I hope these stay safe 🙏. I tried searching various combinations of the name and couldn't find anything even remotely similar so just got fed up with it 😂

Ah no worries. Do you know how to create one? If you go to your plant list, delink the encyclopaedia tag from this photo and it will let you create a new one. Alternatively, if you’re not sure I can create it for you.

I did have a go at doing it for my Avocado, but I really don't know enough about them to fill out most of the fields, and then it still came up "unknown".. I'm honestly hopeless on this 😂😂

Don’t worry - just put the name in as a minimum if you like, the GT team will fill in all the other missing stuff. Most people just do the name anyway.
