One of the few winter fruiting trees that are native to california, the toyon bush packs a punch. it provides fruit in abundance. Most think its poisonous, but if so id be dead 10x over, they are super good 😂👌 #toyon #california #californianative #berries #fruit #healthy #trees #gyo #losangeles #food

We planted one a year ago. It is small and we had to cage it to protect it from the deer. 😳 Looking forward to a time when we can see the berries on a mature bush.

Anyone ever tried toyon bush berries?( Also known as California holly or christmas berry bush, but toyon is their native american given name) They are slightly acidic and bitter, i have grown fond of their taste 😛 i am excited to grow a few on my own and see how well the fruit does in wine, juice and jam. These fruiting shrubs are a california and western USA native, that grows well in full sun or shade.

They almost never require fertilizer, are extremely drought tolerant, and even are fire resistant. These shrubs attract wildlife like crazy, from butterflies & bees, to birds and small animals. It seems im not the only one looking for the berries 🤭 Supposedly many think hollywood got its name from the hillsides full of these plants, but i found conflicting stories lol. What we know for sure is they serve as great erosion and fire control and have for hundreds of years.
