Generally very hardy. Best in half sun half shade. Use Ericaceous compost when potting. Time now to start feeding fortnightly with something like Miracle Gro which contains both major and micro nutrients. Yes there are male and female varieties. I think yours is a male. Which usually has the better flowers. The buds form in autumn and are a good red colour all winter opening to white flowers in spring. The females or hermaphrpdite varieties eg reevesiana will bear nice red berries.

If the foliage start to yellow give it a feed of Epsom salts. My favourite is 'Kew Green'.
