Thank you @rachelbrooks @joanboston & @Keely I will definitely try a few cuttings. Sadly Keely, it's way too big & growing in narrow raised bed made of fancy bricks, which would be wrecked if I tried to get it out 😑
It looks as if it's growing right from the base so if there's any small branches or suckers growing from the base take a sharp knife or a little pruning saw and cut down to try and take a piece of root with the branch. I've done this several times with different shrubs and twisted willow trees in particular. It is like taking a root cutting, a way of giving the cutting a head start & soon flourishes. 😀
Just had a look at the original photo & although I can't see where the base of it is or the soil around it, there is some tantalizing growth at or near the base, so I must have as closer look next weekend before he movers! Thanks Mo. @angipangi
Grafting is the best way to get a new plant from it sadly, take lots of cuttings or collect any seeds and try to germinate them but they may not come true to mother plant @jeatacake
Ordered my first acer last night 🤗 No idea where I'm going to have the space for it, given sun's a premium in the back but hey ho! Also ordered another couple of biggies - someone needs to set up plantaholics anonymous! 😂
This is my brother's acer & he's moving house me t month but too big to dig up & move. I wonder if a cutting is worth trying?
Definitely worth giving it a go...👍🏼👍🏼
Always worth a try
Id give it a go at digging it up but take cuttings first 👌😍 its lovely
