Hi Nicola. I emailed an Apple tree specialist I know and he says that the black growths are Burr Knots. They’re quite common on Apple trees but they can be a nuisance especially when, like yours have done, they start producing roots. He says the red finger-like roots should be cut off and then you should keep an eye on the knots as they can can be a site where disease can gain access to the tree. Also keep an eye out for canker, too. I hope that helps 🤞😘
Barbara you’re a star. Thank you so much for this information. It’s very helpful. And we’ve all learnt something too. 😃@cee @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom @jacaranda @fisherman @charlotte
My pleasure! Sometimes it’s not what you know but who you know!!! This app is all about helping each other, sharing plants and tips so I’m just happy that I can pass on information to others when I have the chance. 😘
Help! Can anyone tell me what’s going on at the base of my Apple tree? Is it just roots?
Oh how peculiar. No idea I'm afraid🤔, Have you cut any branches off from that area? 🤷‍♀️ #appletree #help #plantadvice
It looks as I did but I haven’t Celina. @cee

I wonder if the roots are damaged so it’s making more.....🤷🏼‍♀️
