@jennlamaye how old is this dogwood... I cold stratified my seeds for spring planting. It's nice to see what these guys will look like.

I'm going to guess that it's 5-8 years old. It was here when we bought the house. Aggressive grower. I kept chopping it back, but didn't know how to do it properly until this past year. This fall in going to take it almost to the ground so that I can get the red twig color back next year. @perennial_lover

I keep seeing everyone’s beautiful red branches coming out of the ground, and I realized I must be missing something. Mine aren’t red. Nope. Because in the three years I have lived here I didn’t know to lop it to the ground. Missed the window for Fall. So it says early spring when it’s still dormant. When is that exactly? 🤔 @columbiariver @karisamuel when do you prune yours?

Cut off all the branches near the soil above the first leaf node to completely renew the shrub. A flush of new growth will appear during the next growing season, restoring the shrub. This method keeps the shrub to a smaller size.

Cut the branches with sharp pruning shears, loppers or a saw at the base near the ground above the first leaf node. Prune red dogwood bushes in late fall after the leaves have dropped. The bush may also be pruned in early spring before new growth appears, but it should be dormant.

I prune anything damaged from winter weather in the early spring, before it buds out. Then I prune as needed, (cuttings were taken in October), and keeping it's shape. I'm a #rulebreaker though!

Kari, your weather seems more severe than mine, but when is early spring for you? I keep trying to google it for my region without any luck. I’m thinking March? But last year I thought I was pruning in early spring and I ended up butchering my honeysuckle... it was too late for it to recover for the year. I’m hesitant to touch anything else because my plants seem to do better without my “help”. Lol @KariSamuel

March or sometime April for us! We had a blizzard on April 21st the day I went into labor with my daughter! #climatechange #climatechangeisreal

@fuma Thank you thank you!! This is the first year I've seen it flower, so it's been my mystery shrub for two years now!
