Sad sad corn. Oh well. I tried. Next year, I'm doing a whole 4x4' of broccoli. Lol

@cyndi it was so sad. All that work... But you certainly understand. There's only so much you can do. And apparently I'm not the only one that had issues. It's okay. Next year at least everything will be ready and in place. I need to amend the soil though.

Has anyone grown corn before? When do I start dusting?

Do you mean pollinating? I did when the silks started poking through. There was heaps of pollen to go around from the tassels on the other plants so we repeated it about 2 weeks later just to be sure. Had a bumper crop :)

Few tastes say summer like fresh sweet corn, straight from your garden. If you're using the space-saving method square-foot gardening, your sweet corn needs fertilizer throughout the growing season to ensure you end up with sweet and juicy ears at harvest time. Corn is a heavy feeder, and square-foot gardening uses nutrients in a concentrated manner. Keep up with the fertilizing chores to give your corn the best chance to grow and produce.

Cultivation Instructions Seed Saving Instructions Domesticated in Mexico by 6,700 B.C., corn is a staple food and has many ritual uses. Flour corn is soft grinding corn used for cornmeal, elote (roasting corn or fresh tamale corn) and hominy (masa or nixtamal). In early spring or with summer rains, plant seeds 1" deep. If rows, plant seeds 12" apart; or 3-4 seeds 18" apart in basins (for arid regions) or hills. Needs rich soil & moisture. Heat, aridity & high winds can all reduce pollination.

Since corn is wind pollinated and since each kernel represents a successful link between a corn silk strand and pollen grain, it is possible that not all silk strands will receive a pollen grain, leaving a naked spot or patch on the ear of corn.

Pest : Corn Earworm The corn earworm changes from a white to a black caterpillar and as an adult changes yet again into a dull grey-brown colored moth that migrates at night. Eggs and worms are often found eating in the silk or tips of ripe corn. Prevention and Care: place about 1 teaspoon of mineral oil on the tips of each ear of corn as soon as the silk appears. This usually keeps the moth from laying her eggs there.

@cyndi I was reading about that, and I'm going to try the three sisters method on a 4'x4' square gardening layout. Wish me luck!
