I love Hawthorne, despite how sharp and prickly they are ...I've turned a bush that I had into a topiary pillar...originally I had wanted to get rid of it but its roots were so hard to get out and it grew back so fast that I decided to embrace it and love it instead, despite the fact that it was slap bang in the middle of my garden. So its now a feature instead...and I love it.
