I’ve done the same thing- the leaves have got so big - although you had lots more flowers than me- or Anne!

QUESTION please, I know it's way after Chelsea but is it too late to 'chop' these? They were at their best then and Leeds is so far north!

sadieberg

It is not too late to cut them back if they are now going over, you would get a second flush but not as good as the first flush of flowers, the foliage would renew too.

I gave some of mine the chop last week👍🏻

Wait until the flowers are nearly finished then cut right down to the ground. You will get new leaves in a couple of weeks, possibly more flowers. Not every plant is suitable for the Chelsea chop. I wouldn’t chop geraniums in May 😀

When the flowers are dead pull them off by hand and it’ll leave the foliage...they should pull off easily..👍🏼

Thank you all so much @sadieberg @cee @joanboston @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom I shall take a combination of all your advice and pull the dead flowers off until nearly all have gone and then cut right down 🤞🙂🌝

Well I cut mine right back last week, still quite a few flowers but the stems had all flopped and it looked untidy. Even if I just get new foliage back it will look tidier than before I cut it if that makes sense! @jpea

It does Sue, mine is standing well but there's a lot of finished flower heads on it @lilybee

It still looks lovely so maybe it might be worth just deadheading and leaving until the foliage goes? @jpea

I'm still in the learning stage, but after reading this, and all your lovely flowers, I'd probly do the same thing Jeremy. In my task list it said to Chelsea chop some of my summer blooming plants that were just budding! What? They're just budding! So I presented the case to my gt friends. I cut back a few by a third or so, buds and all. They are now branching out but haven't formed new buds yet. These are beautiful by the way, I'd hate to chop them, too!

I think most of us are in your way of thinking @lesliecole49 and I'm a great believer in common sense of leaving alone what isn't broken but also I'm aware of leaving stuff too late so I ask here more as a sanity (or loss thereof) check

Morning Jeremy ☺ she's a beauty 💖 Will she grow in shade do you think?

6w
comment
jpea

Morning Ange, she is and according to the RHS it'll grow in any aspect or soil from full sun to partial shade (like most perennial geranium) but I don't think you'll get many flowers in full shade
