So... while I found a reference indicating that they strike readily from cuttings, I couldn't find any info on specifics so I've tried to hedge my bets. Medium = 1 perlite : 1 hort sand : 2 potting mix. Cuttings = a little of mature wood (I had to prune it so figure I might as well), some semi-hard, soft, and seen as tho there were a bunch of growing tips I shoved some of them in too. Most are potted (with hormone) and bagged outside (but on my deck so def no frost risk) while the growing tips

are inside under my grow lights (I figured they might be a bit more temp sensitive with their new greeness). Cross all your fingers for me!!

Just repotted my black pine. When I washed the roots I realised they were a mess (there was a huge girdling root that would have killed it as it grew bigger - looks to have been caused by the very original nursery pot). So I had to root prune. Wish I'd known to do it the first, or even second time I repotted. Terrifying. I hope it's OK because it's my favourite tree.

I never even knew a tree could be killed by its own roots! TIL

@emch in nature I imagine its not so common but with modern propogation techniques it can be quite common. In this case a cutting was put into a very small tube stock style pot. The roots grew horizontally until they hit the edge of the pot. The industry assumes that the roots will then go down, but roots are designed to go sideways.

@emch so they start to loop around and circle the pot and because it's a tube stock pot the loop has a diameter of like 5cm. When the plant gets repotted and repotted and then planted into the ground, the roots don't straighten out, but stay in the loop. As the trunk and root get thicker over time, the root forms a tight collar around the trunk and effectively chokes it to death.

@emch The other issue with roots like this, is that they don't end up spreading out into the soil well, reducing the tree's nutrient uptake ability and stability. The only way to fix it, is to root wash and examine the roots when repotting. Once the roots have gone woody, they generally can't be straightened and have to be pruned off - just like a crossing branch.

So sad this happens.

Wanted one last year when I was at the North Coast Botanic Gardens. This year I found one at a nursery!!!! 😍😍

@KelsiBriana it's on the Australian rare and endangered species list too so I am doing my little part for conservation :) apparently they grow well from cutting so I'll see how I go #endangered

@ausgardentags I haven't cut any branches off to try lol. I am contemplating removing a lower branch so I'll def give it a go if I do.
