This sambucca grows far too tall for my border so this year I decided to make it into a #standard shrub and its much better than other years 😄

@linfoster this is my black tower that I made into a lollipop standard as it was 4' higher, to tall for my border grows at least 3' per year if you scroll pics you will see other years 😆

Looks lush Hun my black lace one has buds on this year too had to take it out of the front 2 yrs ago as it was struggling it’s been in a pot since I really want to plant it in the garden but don’t want to upset it 🤷‍♀️

@nessas sorry Hun must have missed this msge. I have got a small pot of black lace from cutting one right back that I was given last year want to grow it in back raised planters and try make it into a standard for some height, def need it now for birdies. I love the black lace one better than this as foliage is feathery. I put this in front last October so I would leave yours until about then If you can preserve maybe just put the pot where it's going 😄

@jonners73 @justin @ukjohnny all done n dusted fingers crossed all be OK next year a bit of dark foliage and something for the birds to go in as don't have much height in the front border, amazing how you find space when you need it 😁 thanks all for your advice much appreciated 👍😄

@Jasonsparkes1 luckily this is black tower so may get tall but not as big as black lace I have a cutting of black lace for next year but im keeping it in a pot at back of bin store to try get some height above the fence will try train it into a standard as it gets bigger like my variegated one at front. Want something to encourage more birds in to fly in and wanted some dark foliage in front from tower, the big pot will come in handy for Dahlia's next year as wont put some of big ones cont'd....

Sorry perps I'm after more #advice this sambuca is currently in a large pot its finished flowering and leaves are going over I'm trying to plan for next year and want to put it in the front border can I move it now? I know its probably best to move in early Spring but I always have loads to do in Spring will I loose it if I move it now? 🤔 any help as always is much appreciated 😃

The sambuccas I've had have always been really hardy and I've had no problem transplanting. One word or caution though, if you're planting into the ground it's likely to grow quite big so make sure it's got plenty of room

@justin thank you so much this is the tower one Justin so hoping it will just gather height I have made my variegated one in front into a standard and under planted just wanted something a darker shade for border as everything's just green or variegated so this should blend in well. Looks like a job for today 😀

Morning Keely, great advice from @ukjonny @justin . Also prepare the hole well and use bone meal to settle the roots if you have some. Remember to keep it well watered too! 😊

@jonners73 thanks Kim always add bonemeal to all my planting up all done pic to follow hopefully it will settle in well and I don't regret it next year 😁👍

Great job @Keely I would love one but it's the room. Maybe I could squeeze one in 😅 They produce the most beautiful flowers and coloured foliage. Good old bone meal you can't beat it! I'm sure you won't regret it 😊

No @titchyfra had it a few years but cut it back wrong time of year so first time its flowered trying to establish which variety it is, as not black lace as leaves are bigger but flowers same! Been told its Black Beauty but flowers seem sparcer on that am confused i like it anyway looks nice against the seagrass summerhouse 😁

It is nice @Keely I thought I remembered that you had one but then was confused seeing the box but my fault as reading posts "backwards" it then made sense! Does seem as the leaves on the box pic are more lacy to those in your pic of the plant , shame not what you thought but you like it anyway 😀

@reedie-cottsge this is what label said!

9w
comment
reedie-cottsge

That's odd because it's definitely not 'Black Lace'. Either ' Black Beauty' or ' Black Tower'. The foliage is all wrong for it to be 'Black Lace'. Maybe someone mixed the labels up at garden centre etc??? Flowers and berries will pretty much be the same, just foliage that will be different. ☺

Keely

I think it could be black tower and its just spread because I cut it back wrong time of year beauty flowers are a bit more spread out than the tower @reedie-cottsge 👍

@Keely Great pictures of your Sambucus. However, it isn't 'Black Lace'. It looks like it is Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Black Beauty'. The foliage on 'Black Beauty' are pinnate, as opposed to the deeply dissected purplish-black foliage on 'Black Lace'. If you look at the Sambucus 'Black Lace' on my page, you will see the difference in the foliage, between your Sambucus and my Sambucus. Hope this helps. 😀😎😀😎😀
