This plant is 4 years old and only ever flowered in its first year, poorly might I add. This year it is absolutely loaded with buds and this is the first flower 😁😍 #camellia #camellia-yuletide

@gjones @pelly @jacaranda @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom @hkyfvr @KOutdoors thank you ladies 😀 a move to the shade of the shed and finally remembering to feed it seems to have done the trick 😅 nice to have the colour this time of year 😍

I haven't heard of this one but I love camellias with single flowers 😍😍

@ublaszko it’s supposed to flower through til early new year so got it for a bit of winter colour. It’s so little though, don’t expect much this year 😂

It has a couple of lovely flowers! I have 2 camellias with a total of one flowerbud 😂😂 Another year or two before they mature.

@ublaszko I vowed never to get one because of the bud situation. They’ll make me anxious 😂 how old are yours?

I bought one last year and another one this year. The one with a flowerbud is the one I bought last year. I think in this climate bud drop shouldn't really be a problem. The only problem I can think of is if you use the wrong compost or the wrong fertiliser or if you plant it where it gets morning sun.

@ublaszko should flower properly next year I’d imagine. They’re gorgeous flowers on camellias so even if it’s just 1 it’s well worth it 😁 my grandparents never get theirs to flower but they don’t ever feed or repot so they’ve been in the same soil for decades now 😂

Did you pot in ericaceous compost ?

@gjones thank you 😁 I did, wanted more for winter/spring interest so hope I’ve made some good choices 😜 also planted up a lot of bulbs but will wait until there’s something to photograph before I add those 😂

@wtwitchell6969 I just potted in regular compost as I do with all my plants. It’s not supposed to be but I don’t put anything in specific composts

Shame you grandparents' camellia hasn't flowered in years but all it needs is ericaceous compost and it should have new buds the following year. I just buy one 50 litres bag of ericaceous compost in spring and it's enough to last me all year. I read it somewhere you're supposed to change compost every 2-3 years if growing shrubs in pots. 😊

@ublaszko I’ve tried to get them to let me sort them out but they are defiant 🤣🤣🤣

Same as my parents 😅 I'm only allowed to help with pruning shrubs but my parents still have to be there to supervise. And they don't let me thin out dead stems at the base of the plant because they insist those stems are alive 😅
