2 years in a row my pears have got to this size then shrivelled and dropped off the tree. I thought birds were getting them but looks like it’s not that. Any explanation??
#advice @cyndi can you help?
@cyndi #fruittree-advice thank you! It’s done exactly the same thing 2 years in a row (I only planted it last year). It blossoms, starts to grow clusters of baby pears - I counted around 20 this year.... then within a few hours (I was checking at least twice a day this year!) they are all gone. I originally thought it was birds but this year I saw the last one on the tree which had visibly shrivelled up.
When I planted the tree I added compost & dug a circle around the tree to which I added bark mulch. I have watered regularly but not fed. It’s a Conference pear and was marked as self-fertile.
I asked at our local garden centre and they reckon it’s a pollination problem. Concorde is supposed to be self-fertile but it looks like this one isn’t!

….. but what’s happened to the bark? It’s split in several places.
