Finally getting round to planting out my last baby delphinium (proudly grown on from the tidgy black 'pot' on the left there!!)...I had five others: 1. Got mostly devoured by slugs so I dug it up and brought it back in for a rest (!), 2.accidentally planted on it's own in a very low bed, and the other 3 in a clump, in the middle of our biggest bed. My question (!): should I plant this with the others or would it be significant enough when grown to plant on it's own please? Meaning, can one mak
I kept mine in pots until they got to a decent size, slugs just devour young small leaves. They naturally die down over winter and I protect the new Spring growth until it is big enough to handle a little bit of slug attack. I haven't done any pinching out though 😊
@sadieberg ...ah, ok, I never actually considered keeping it potted; guess I thought it might stunt it's growth but yes that two weeks of solid rain we had was boom time for the slugs! ! The one they got worst in one night-ONE!!-had only one leave left! ! I've reluctantly had to use slug pellets now. Sorry to go on, but how big did you grow yours to then please? X
Mine are three years old in pots, it is not difficult if you are good at keeping them watered. It is mainly young growth that slugs can't resist. I won't use slug pellets because they are poison for all our wildlife
About the pellets first. ..yes...#shame...we were sooo reluctant-I lost lots of my new plants and we were out picking slugs out through the blooming night at times...75+ on the first few days! And beer traps. .and plastic cloches but I was just so sad and disheartened to be losing my babies!! I have used as little as possible and the tub says if you use as instructed it won't harm wildlife/pets but...yrh..partner especially was sooo thinking of hedgehogs (although we have lots of cats so..) l..
And the pots...wow...I jist thought because they were a tall plant ...any who. .last question then I promise (!!) But..how big are yours now then? And is it one flower stem per plant or more? Thanks so much for answering my rookie questions! ! Xx
Ask away, there is always someone on here to help 👍🏻 I have a blue and a white in one big pot and I had five big flower spikes. When they went over and I cut them off I got a few more smaller ones. You do have to look after them a lot more in pots so if you can't commit to that they are better in the ground.

Also, can anyone tell me if these need 'pinching' in any way please? X

We definitely need an alternative. X

Glad you are using pellets responsibly, some people put far too many down thinking it will kill more slugs but it doesn't.
