Some of the ginger lilies that washed into the pond during hurricane Irma are blooming for the first time.

#Ginger plant and roots in the ground. There are so many planted here, from long before us. They seem to really thrive in the hot, humid, shady, swampy grounds we have around here. #9a #Florida
I agree, @cyndi, they are really pretty! I’m in Jacksonville, and they seem to like our heat, humidity, and damp, swampy soil, so I imagine they’d thrive in Georgia, too. And they seem to like it best in mostly shade, which is always nice to find.

We have a lot of #VariegatedShellGinger roots in the ground that were here before us. During Hurricane Irma, in ‘17, many of them slid into the pond by our yard. They seem to be pretty happy there! This patch attracts a lot of wildlife, too. #Florida #9a
@laneygarden are these full sun
@hannahchristine Yes! This area starts to get sun very early, and then it stays pretty sunny all day. Only the roots in more shade will flower.
@laneygarden oh ok cuz i hv some redbutton ginger plants are they basically full sun like these or shade
Must smell wonderful! #hedychium #hedychium-coronarium #whitegingerlily
Lovely.
@lovestogarden @novicegardenlover Thanks! They really are so pretty and smell incredible! I’m sitting on my patio, about 20 feet from the pond, and can smell them from here. 🥰
Oh wow! Wonderful. Maybe one for the wishlist, but not sure it's available locally.
@novicegardenlover It would do great there, I’m sure! The roots look like ginger and our yard is full of them from a previous owner. Several roots slid into the pond a few years ago during Hurricane Irma and this is the first year they’ve bloomed here in their new spot. 💕
