@jeatacake the black stuff came off with wet cotton buds but I moved some soil to see how far down it went and noticed this new bit sprouting. Do you or does anyone know if this is a sucker or a new stem? Should I snip it off or wait?π¨ (the bit on the root ball)

I believe that is new growth, I wouldn't cut it off. Even tho it's called tree it is a shrub, you will have multiple stems!πππ

Thanks @ShelleySnyder π I have a terrible urge to snip it off. I'm not sure if I've made it worse, i went a bit over the top with cotton buds and I think I've removed scales that are meant to be at the bottom #trialanderror π

Wow newly newly @leno

We all have trial and errors! But have patience and you will be rewarded!ππ

It looks so different nowπ Hopefully it will thrive from here. Mine also has s new shoot coming up well away from the main one. As far as I know, they aren't grafted, so I will leave the new shoot on mine for a bushier plant, as @ShelleySnyder says π

@jeatacake on the bright side this one is still surviving, I watch him like a hawkπ

@jeatacake I'm just noticing the black bits, is this normal? Resembles my cooking skillsπ π

Do you mean on the stem? If so I think it's ok as the new shoot looks good & healthy. It may be just be a natural feature of that variety π

@jeatacake I hope so. I don't want to bring it in now because it's done well outside & I brought 2x wisteria in to save them & they pretty much died overnight, I have one very sad wisteria left outside in plastic greenhouse. It has one or two leaves left.π

Both wisteria & tree peony are as hard as nails so they will be fine outside. Their native winters are far colder.

Yeh, the stem. That's what I thought but I put him in the plastic greenhouse just incase but I take him out for fresh air and daylight everydayπ(peony)I'm sure he likes the snow but I can't experiment at this stage of the gameπ shouldn't try to fix what isn't broken. Wait 'til you see my only wisteria thoughπ§ @jeatacake

Thought for a minute you'd taken a blow torch to it to thaw it out! π

πcan't say I haven't considered these thawing out techniques @jeatacake

Lol! As they say "don't try this at home"! π

Monty Don would be Monty Mortified π π π

πππ @jeatacake sub zero temperatures, panic not! Get the blow torch out! Hopefully monty mortified doesn't see thisπ π

@ShelleySnyder this was it this morning, pre-cotton budsπ π

Tibetan peony tree, I'll plant him in the ground in Spring so fingers crossed he survives winter π

Should be ok if not too wet π Do you know what the flowers will look like?

@jeatacake no idea, I'm guessing yellowπ Paeonia delavayi var. delavayi f. lutea. I keep finding different colours with same name on google so we'll just have to wait & see. I'll plant in the ground in spring if he survives winter, keeping a close eye on this one.π

Sounds promising π How did you come by it? I acquired a white one in Holland in April which is still in its pot. Will plant it out in spring & hope for its first flowers. I have a couple of others, but they are (so far) a bit reluctant to flower!

@jeatacake you'll have to post a pic. I got 3 sent across from Ireland & kept 1, the other 2 went to the Tibetan monastery where I know they'll be in great hands. Ive got my one in the plastic greenhouse but it seems to be doing ok, I'll just keep an eye on them, I've got a feeling more snow is on the way ββ

We may even get snow here tonight/tomorrow. Peonies are as tough as old boots though, so mine should all be fine outside. There is a Thai Buddhist monastery/temple near where I am but U'm not so sure the monks there are well versed in peony care. If (& that's a big if) any of mine do flower next spring, you'll see it on here first π

Keep us postedπA lot of volunteers help with the gardens, next project is to grow a new wild wood on a stretch of wasteland. I'm sure they're having a gardening week to get the trees planted in spring. Volunteers always welcome!π
π¨π¨π¨does anyone know what's wrong with this and how to fix? #peony-advice
Could it be Peony Wilt? π€π€
ππ @pelly
If it is you need to get rid of the affected leaves in your landfill bin. There is no chemical solution for it unfortunately ππ
Could it just be they are drying out? Or actually it could be ovetwatering?
I hope it's dried out a bit and not peony wiltπ’I've snipped the bad bits off, watered and put in a shaded bit, it was in full sun, maybe it needs in the groundπ @ublaszko @pelly
I hope so too Leno ππ
It's probably just too much sun. Mine are in full sun but behind tall perennials so not blasted by the sun. But one that was getting direct sun went to peony heaven π It just couldn't take it even though I kept on top of watering and I only planted it a few months back. Luckily, I got 2 for 1 packs of each peony just for this kind of situation π
Oh he's not ready for peony heaven yetπ must have faithπ @ublaszko the shock of sun π sun shock he'll be fine
I think mine is definitely a goner π Unless it sprouts back once the weather cools down. I've kept it just in case. Your one is still kicking π
Thanks for the help @cyndi @ublaszko
