#gyo #cucumber #schoolgarden Popped in to school just to make sure all was ok in the garden and found cucumbers!
That's impressively early in the year, isn't it?
@Stupey we've already had some. It's a commercial greenhouse variety so is probably early fruiting. It was a grafted plant given to me by a friend who had some spare
well jel 🤢😀👍🤜

#cucumber doing brilliantly in the school greenhouse! Most of our kids have never seen a cucumber growing before!
Wow. What an amazing amount you are growing . I would loved to have gone to your school !!!!
Lol @charlotte ! The school got a huge chunk of funding about 10 years ago to do up the very badly neglected and overgrown science garden area. Sadly, like most things it was looked after for a short while until the teachers and technicians got bored and when I started working as a technician last year, my colleague and I took it on because it was simply too amazing an area to neglect. The greenhouse and pond have been around for as long as anyone can remember (20 years)

#cucumber A question, maybe for @linfoster .....I read today that one should remove male flowers from cucumbers or they turn out bitter. However, I really can't see any! Every flower on this plant seems to have a fruit attached! Is it because it's a commercial variety ..... or maybe I'll just ask the person who gave me the plant!
@linfoster thanks! I'll go through tomorrow and pick off any excess flowers. Will be interesting to see what it tastes like. I've never liked cucumbers hence never grown them.
@linfoster let's give these a go! I've had cucumbers that other people have grown before and they have have quite thick skins and not that nice. This one "looks" ok and I suppose it's grown in good garden compost and I suppose organic .....
True! I actually use the work "organic" in terms of food and gardening a bit tongue in cheek anyway. I'm an "organic chemist" by profession ...... I specialised in the chemistry of carbon compounds! I've had plenty of non-scientists comment "oh organic? That's good then!" ..... well, no, not really, it's just a field of chemistry ... As far as organic food/farming/gardening goes, it's just a buzz word .... (puts cat among pigeons and runs .....)

Lots of tiny cucumbers growing well!
@linfoster it's in the greenhouse so should be ok. The friend who gave me the plant has several in his polytunnel ..... It's just the one leaf damaged so keeping everything crossed!
@linfoster, I am abandoning it over the bank holiday but it has been fed and well watered ..... never grown cucumbers before, I don't actually like them enough to go out and buy a plant but I'm terrible if someone gives me plants!

A gift from a friend! A "turbo" cucumber! Has anyone else grown one of these? It's a commercial variety apparently.
