Been gardening for a good number of years now. Love the cottage garden look and growing lots of herbs. Huge fan of companion gardening.

Crumble, cobbler, fool, ice cream, jelly, jam ..... this bush simply fruits and fruits @charlotte ! I think this year hopefully if my life has managed to slow down sufficiently it's going to be gooseberry wine!

@linfoster recipe please! I give away tonnes of gooseberries every year simply because there is a limited number of days we can eat them in a week and much as I love them, gooseberries every day for a couple of months is a bit much. Never had the time to make wine with them before but this year is for me, without exhausting myself.

Gooseberry looking healthy as ever! Must be because it lives next to the compost heap!

Arrgghhh not seen this before! Is this the dreaded gooseberry sawfly that's had all the leaves on my gooseberry?

@sylvietee, @richard.spicer.7906 ...... Anyone? .... @ukgardentags .... Reading up on gooseberry sawfly tells me that the larvae munch the leaves from April through to about July? September?? I know it's very warm but ..... Does anyone have any experience of this and do you know if the leaves are eaten now, after fruiting will it be ok next year?

Sorry Loretta, I've not come across this before and don't have much experience with fruit growing. But I hope someone can help identify the problem for you though 😕

@richard.spicer.7906 no worries! That gooseberry bush is something like 15 years old and has fruited heavily every year so it doesn't really owe us anything but it's just annoying to find a new destructive bug in the garden!

@sylvietee that's great thanks! I literally didn't notice until I went out in the garden and saw it had been stripped! No sign of any caterpillars either! Fingers crossed for fruit next year!

Anyone else got a bumper crop of gooseberries this year? Anyone got any interesting suggestions for what to do with them other than jam, crumble, cobbler, cordial, fool, ice cream?

I grow a lot of berries and i mix them up in different smallish bags freeze them and then make smoothies with them. So u could have 1 flavour or 2,3 flavours in one bag.

Or if you don't like that idea, how about a sorbet? Or just cooked in a pavlova? Or perhaps a chutney though have never tried that!

Hmmm pavlova's one I hadn't thought of! Done sorbet and chutney before. Gooseberry tarte tatin was a complete visual disaster last weekend but tasted great!
