Absolutely love to get in the garden when I can. Love birds, fish and plants. I live in the heart of Sydney suburbia on an average block of land

Looks good. Do you worry about the roots? I have always wanted to grow bambo (endles supply of garden stakes) but i know that they can become invasive then i read that clumping types are fine but over time can also become a problem

5w
comment
nej

@kristina2 this is a clumping type which I planted about 5 years ago and was 1 metre tall. It is now about 10 metres tall. I snap off new culms where they are growing in the wrong spot and cut out old canes. They do drop a lot of leaves most of the time, so raking can be a chore, but heaps of mulch 😊

kristina2

Wow 10m that is huge! probably not a type that would be good for my garden i can imagine them whipping around in strong winds. Looks lovely tho specialy when you have a closer look at the colour and paterns on the canes.

Is this quite invasive or well behaved

6w

@carolgs this is a clumping variety not a spreading one but in saying that it is a large bamboo so it needs to be managed for its particular location 😊

@terrimclaughlin those films are about 8 to 10cm thick so they are good for a lot of stuff. That's a begonia flower stalk on the right

@terrimclaughlin they are dormant leaf buds but further up they grow out, if you prune it down these will be activated

@belindah some are no good as they are too bitter and they have too much cyanide but if you boil them and keep changing the water then most are good

Having bamboo in the garden means regular workouts raking the leaves they constantly shed, but I think it's well worth the effort. #bamboo #bamboo-advice
