Hi everyone. This is my #sucess, it was a supermarket buy (indoor plant) about nine years ago 🌸 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Beautiful 😍 #hydrangeachallenge2024 💕
Wow
Thanks very much Barbara. I posted it fully meaning to tag it for the challenge 🙄 so thank you also for that 😘 @jacaranda
It is a bit isnβt it Charlotte 🥰 @charlotte

Iβm late deadheading my hydrangea this year and Iβve also cut a lot of dead wood out of it. Hopefully it will be thanking me as Iβve never done it before 🙄 #hydrangea-altona-pink
It will Jane 😊
I am sure it will be all the better for it.
Thanks ladies 🤞🥰 @juliesgarden @columbiariver @joannie.a

The size of the flower heads on my hydrangea are so disappointing this year. They're all so small 💗😢 #hydrangea-macropylla-altona
Most of mine are the same. Iβm putting it down to the really hot spell we had recently plus the lack of significant rain. 🤷🏼ββοΈ
Mine are the same. Apart from Annabelle, I think Iβm cursed when it comes to hydrangeas! 😭
No flowers on any of mine 🤷ββοΈ
No flowers on mine either( apart from paniculata) Iβm sure the hard frosts did for them
No flowers on mine eitherβ¦no sign of any buds at all
Even here the only one blooming is my Tuff Stuff hydrangea. Disappointing for sure. 🥺
It looks like we are all pretty much the same, it's obviously not a good year for them 😢 @jacaranda @mulberry @hebelover @joanboston @italydiva @hkyfvr
So pretty and healthy 💕💕💕💕💕
- Early Spring 2023

My hydrangea has had its yearly chop. Just need to tidy it up a bit now. It looks so bare 🥺 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Things are really coming to life now it will soon fill out 💚
Yes it should do now. I just need to prune out some old stems 👍 @Auricula
Growing well
- Late Winter 2023

Morning everyone. There is a lot of #newgrowth on my hydrangea, well protected, hopefully, by last years blooms 🌿 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane.. that looks promising 💚
Morning Jane, itβs looking in fine fettle, which is more than can said for my Little Lime! It was only small and has had every type of weather thrown at it! 💚
Morning Jane, looks promising 😀
Morning 💚
Afternoon Julie, Elise, Angela and Jason. It's doing well since far 🤞 @juliesgarden @Auricula @italydiva @hebelover

Morning Jane, thatβs lovely🌸🌸🌸
Thanks Julie 😘 @juliesgarden
Morning Elise, thank you, I love them at this stage 😍 @Auricula
Morning Jane 👋 You too! 😊
Afternoon Angela, thank you 👋 @italydiva
Beautiful colours
I think I prefer it at this stage 🤔🌸 @hebelover

Love the colours on this hydrangea leaf β€οΈ🖤💚 #foliagefriday #beautyindecay #hydrangea-altona-pink
Looks like you have dipped the end in ink.
How lovely βΊοΈ
Shhh 🤐🤣 @charlotte
It's the only one like this 😍 @Auricula
Quite fascinating!

Morning everyone. September is going out with a bang here. We have thick fog now and heavy rain and strong winds forecast for this afternoon. My #hydrangea-altona-pink is looking very autumnal too 🍁 #foliagefriday
Morning Jane 🍂 Autumn's definitely coming in hard, do need the rain up here though, Yorkshire Water just announced that the hosepipe ban has been extended through the entire of 2024!!
Morning Jane. Foggy here too and going to rain for most of the day. Pretty leaf colouration 👋😊β€💚
Morning Jason. Thatβs rather a scary scenario. We are very lucky with our water authority in some ways. They are very focused on solving issues although one of them appears to involve flooding a vast area of farmland not far from me! @hebelover
Morning Pauline, thank you, we need the rain just not the gales 💨 @flof1952
Morning Jane .. not sure youβll have that beautiful leaf after tonight💦💨💦💨 .. forecast is particularly bad and we have a night out 🙄😂
Morning Julie, youβre probably right. I hope you enjoy your night regardless of the weather 🥰 @juliesgarden
👍🏻👍🏻
Morning Jane, love the colours, yes, the weather forecast mirrors the state of the countryβ¦ 🍁🍂
Snap. I've just commented on your post about the weather today 😂 @Auricula
Morning Jane, the autumnal shades are so pretty arenβt they?!
I love autumn for all the beautiful colours 😍 @italydiva
- Mid Summer 2022

I've just been pruning the worst of the frazzled hydrangea heads off and this one caught my eye. The colours are beautiful 💙💗💙 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Gorgeous 💜💗💙
Thanks Julie, this one didn't get the chop 😍 @juliesgarden
My Hydrangeas were one of the few things unaffected, but they are in full shade
Mine is in semi shade, luckily it only got fried at the top 😥 @hebelover
Itβs a lovely colour🤗
Beautiful colours Jane 💙💗
Thanks very much Enid and Diane 😍 @godfreye @hkyfvr
Great color Jane! 💗💙💘😍
Thanks muchly Shelley 💗💙 @ShelleySnyder
Very welcome! 💘😍
Always welcome Jane 😍
- Mid Summer 2022

I've lost all the flowers near the top of my hydrangea, they're totally frazzled. I've also had to more ot less completely deadhead my fuchsias as they were the same. The heat as damaged several other plants too 😔 #hydrangea-altona-pink #heatwave-damage
My Spirea Genpei is completely frazzled - contemplating cutting it back. 😕. Compost bin full of fried leaves. Supposed to have rain todayβ¦
It's such a shame when you put so much effort in and then this happens. But if this weather is the shape of things to come, I think we all need to take a look at what we grow. I know the amount of water I've used over the last few weeks is just not sustainable.
Itβs such a shame isnβt it. Iβm going to have to take some of the heads off. There are a few new ones coming so hopefully it wonβt look too bad 🤔 @Auricula
My garden is the same. Itβs time to take stock and have a rethink about some areas although Iβm not doing anything drastic just yet as I know lots of things will recover as soon as we get rain! 🤞
You're right Sue. I'm definitely going to look for more drought tolerant plants and I also agree about the water usage. I'm the same as you, I've used so much recently. I actually feel guilty about it. @lilybee
It will take some thinking about Barbara but I want a few new plants for next year. I'm going to try and be more selective though 👍 @jacaranda
Mine is frazzled too even though I kept watering the heat was too much 🙁
Yup, this was watered morning and night 😔 @vegandmore
Perhaps we could all list one plant which has done well during the heat and that way we would know what to try in the future
That's a great idea Joan. I'll start off with my Shasta daisy Real Charmer 👍 @joannie.a @Auricula @churchfarmgarden @jacaranda @vegandmore @hebelover and maybe you could all tag others if you reply @ukgardentags
Well as I posted it today I'll start off with Lavatera, doing fantastic with the heat and drought, all 3 different ones going great 👍 @pelly @joannie.a and I'll tag @juliesgarden @godfreye @flof1952

I soaked this hydrangea early this morning but it obviously wasnβt enough to stop the petals curling up this evening. It shows how hot itβs been here today 🥵🌸 #hydrangea-altona-pink #thirsty #thirsty-hydrangea
Gosh. It is a tad hot today 😁
Mine are the same Jane 🙁
Same here, think there's a few plants going to be lost tomorrow
It recovers every time Laura. Thank goodness I'm not away 🥵 @columbiariver
Just a bit Charlotte 🔥 @charlotte
Iβve soaked it again tonight and Iβll do the same tomorrow early on, thatβs all we can do Elaine. I suppose the clue is in the first part of their nameβ¦.hydra 🤔 @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom
I hope not but I think you might be right Jason 😥 @hebelover
Very nice👌
This is so beautiful Jane! 💘😍
I know just how that poor plant feels
Thanks Shelley, itβs the star of the garden at the moment 🌸 @ShelleySnyder
- Early Summer 2022

Morning everyone. My hydrangea is looking much better after a poor show last year due to getting caught by the late frosts 💞. Have a great day #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane.. magnificent .. I miss my one from the old house , theyβre not keen here 🌸
Morning Jane, it's looking wonderful and you too
Morning Jane looking really healthy and a good shape💕
Thatβs a smasher
What have you been feeding it, roast beef and yorkshire puddings three times a week?
Morning Jane 💖 Thats stunning 😍 3rd year running with no flowers at all on mine 🤷ββοΈ
Thanks very much Julie. You'll have to have one in a pot 😘👍 @juliesgarden
Morning Jeremy, thank you on both counts 💗 @jpea
Ohh now thereβs an idea 😂
Morning Elise, it's doing really well. I didn't know what to expect after last year 🌸 @Auricula
Thanks very much Jackie 🌸 @ajpool60gmailcom
- Late Spring 2022
- 39
Hydrangea flowers just starting to get a touch of pink around the edges. It's got so many flowers this year after a poor showing last year due to getting frosted 🌸 #hydrangea-altona-pink
It looks glorious! I can see my pink and blue black steel varieties coming through with loads of flowers now, still very small though! Canβt wait!
Thanks. I look forward to seeing yours in bloom too 🙏 @szyger
Itβs going to be beautiful Jane🌸
Definitely gonna be pink Jane 😀💗
I think it will Elise, thank you 🙏 @Auricula
If it turned out blue I would be delighted but no way with my soil Elaine 💙 @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom
Donβt they look great at this stage 🤩
Thereβs hardly a time when they donβt apart from after pruning. They have nearly year round interest I always think 😍 @kez001uk
@pelly oh I agree. Even with the dried flower heads they look amazing 😍
- Mid Spring 2022
- 41
Lots of buds coming on the hydrangea 🌺 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Seeing this, I'm after cheaking on mine. I have buds too! Thanks for that made my day
Great isn't it. I only looked two or three days ago and couldn't see anything 😍 @alan1111
😯Cor blimey Iβll check mine tomorrow 👍🏼
Oh wow, thatβs awesome. I planted few this spring but half have been at it with slow leaf growth and the other half are shy with buds still opening up. Might be the shy ones are north facing hence why, but hope they start picking up soon.
Theyβve come really quickly Elaine 😍 @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom
This faces north. Itβs more special this year as the late frosts got it last year and it was a really poor show. Iβm sure yours will appear soon 🌸 @szyger
Something to look forward to 😀
Definitely 😍👍 @italydiva
- Early Spring 2022
- 32
I'm so glad I didn't cut the flower heads off the hydrangeas during the few warm days we had 😍 #hydrangea-altona-pink #beautyindecay
I think there will be plenty of gardeners out there who pruned theirs, Jane, and are now regretting it. I havenβt done mine yet so thereβs something to be said for being cautious (or in my case, lazy!!!) 😂😂
Same here, I resisted! 😃
Same here, but Iβm with Barbara re the lazy bit 🙄😂 @jacaranda
Did mine and theyβre fine even in that bitter wind !!
I prefer cautious 😂 @jacaranda @awomanonabike
Well done Ange, I know you've got itchy fingers 😂 @anges
I got caught by those very late frosts we had last year and I lost one. This one survived but it was nowhere as good as in previous years so I'm leaving them as long as I can Julie 🤞 @juliesgarden
🤣 I certainly have!! They're the only crispy thing in the garden now 😅
Forward thinking βΊοΈ
I try Elise...I try 😂 @Auricula
I pruned mine and theyβre fine but my neighbour just received a blue one that was in flowerβ¦β¦.not any more 😞😢
- Late Winter 2022
- 29
Morning everyone. My hydrangea is forming leaf buds very early which Iβm rather worried about as I lost one to the late frosts last year. Enjoy your day if you can, the wind is evil here again 💨 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane👋. One of my new ones is just beginning to get leaves. The other one Little Lime is just bare twigs. Trouble is fleece wouldnβt last two seconds in this, love your term, evil wind. 🌬
Morning Jane .. Iβll be amazed if anything is left after this week 😞💚
Mine are too Jane. I brought 1 with me and inherited another 4. Fingers crossed they'll be ok 🤞😊
Mine too 🤞
Good morning Jane that looks so healthy. Stay safe🤗
Morning Elise. I think it's just a matter of keeping our fingers crossed now. This storm seems worse than the last two 💨 @Auricula
Morning Julie, I think you're right 😨 @juliesgarden
We definitely will Pauline 🤞 @flof1952
🤞🤞🤞 @Sanja16
Morning Enid, let's hope it stays that way. Thanks and you stay safe too 🤗 @godfreye
Definitely Franklin has the higher winds🌬. The poor birds must be exhausted they are trying to fly β¦

Morning everyone, have a super day 👋. Itβs not just the fading hydrangea flowers that are beautiful at this time of the year, the foliage colours are lovely too 💗💚💗 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane 👋 they are beautiful
Morning Jane, they look hand painted 🖌🎨βΊοΈ
Morning Jeremy, Iβm glad you agree 👍 @jpea
Morning Jane 🍂 Lovely colours
Morning Elise. Shhh, donβt tell everyone 😂 @Auricula
They are .. morning Jane 🍁🍂🍁😍

Morning everyone 👋. I love the hydrangea flowers when they get to this stage. Have a lovely day 🤎 #beautyindecay #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane 🙋 I can never remember if we cut them off the 'Annabelle' hydrangeas as I know we cut them down to the ground unlike the other varieties 🤔
Morning Jane.. me too and have a lovely day too 😘
@jpea .. I leave my Annabelle Jeremy, just deadhead them
Morning Jeremy. This is a mop head hydrangea which you leave the flowers on until April and only prune dead and congested branches. Iβm not sure if itβs the same for the Annabelle types. Sorry, not much help 🤔 @jpea
Morning Julie, thank you 🙏 @juliesgarden
@pelly @juliesgarden I believe Annabelle is different from the other types such as lacecap and the standard ones as like you say Jane their old flower heads protect the new buds but this mop-head one grows from the ground each year 🤔
Ah, not having one myself I know very little about them other than they're gorgeous 🤍 @jpea
@jpea β¦ I donβt cut mine down Jeremy, just remove any dead wood from previous year , seems to work for me
A friend of mineβs Hydrangeas thrive on neglect😂. Thatβs beautiful Jane.
Thanks Elise, mine so too 😂 @Auricula

The garden is full of beautiful cobwebs this morning 🕸 #hydrangea-altona-pink #cobwebs
Good morning Jane yes itβs the season of spiders their webs look lovey🤗
I'm usually full of spiders, but the birds have eaten them all this year 😯
Morning Enid, I donβt think Iβve ever seen so many 🕸 @godfreye
Iβll swap you for some Ladybugs 🐞🕸 @hebelover
Thatβs a big one 😜
Something was very busy definitely 😳 @sharonhayden

It must be Indian summer. We even see cobwebs in our house too.

Morning everyone, have a good day. My hydrangea is starting to go over now, it seems too early 😢🌸 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane 🙋 mine seem to be just coming to their fullness
Morning Jeremy 🙋ββοΈ some flowers are fine but there are a few like this. I don't want to think of autumn yet 😞 @jpea
Me neither Jane, leaves were falling from our tree yesterday!
Morning Jane .. oh a sign of autumn 🍂
So much for summer 😒 @joanboston
I know and I'm not ready for it 😪 @juliesgarden

Morning everyone, have a great day. There arenβt anywhere near as many flowers on this hydrangea as usual but Iβll take that as it got badly frosted earlier in the year and I lost the other one altogether 💗 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Wow .. needed my 😎 for that 💘💘💘
Morning Jane 🙋 mine seem to have recovered from the frost, luckily
Not exactly subtle is it 😂 @juliesgarden
Morning Jane, looking so healthy after the extremes of weather💗
Morning Jeremy, glad to hear it 😍 @jpea
No 😂, soooo pretty 💝 🤩

Love hydrangea in all its stages of colour 💚💗
Yes, they go through so many changes 😍 @hkyfvr
So pretty with the pink tips 💕
Thanks Kerry. Iβm grateful that it has any flowers after getting frosted earlier in the year 🌸 @kez001uk
@pelly I was worried about that too but seems theyβve been spared 🙏🏻 in less harsh years the frost has decimated them so was a lucky escape 😜
I lost one, it was so far gone I couldn't have saved it 😢 @kez001uk
@pelly oh Iβm sorry to hear that 😞 which one was it?
It was another one the same as this so at least I still have one 💗 @kez001uk
Beautiful..... I don't know why, Hydrangea never grow well for me!
Thanks Andreas and thatβs a shame, I wonder why 🤔 @kamaki
Maybe it's the soil in my garden?

Morning everyone, have a great day. Iβm so happy to see the hydrangea budding up as it got caught in the late frosts we had. Itβs not put on as much growth as it usually does though 💚 #hydrangea-altona-pink
Morning Jane 🙋 you too. That looks an unusual hydrangea
Morning Jeremy, no, itβs just the bog standard pink mop head 💗 @jpea
Ah I thought you'd found a yellow or creamy one 😉 @pelly

Now you see it, now you don't. Got my Hydrangeas pruned this afternoon, one of them looks like the frost has caught a few of the leaves, hopefully it will be ok #hydrangea-altona-pink #hydrangea-pruning
Good job done!
Thatβs my job for tomorrow 👍
Thanks Ange, it was a relief to get them done at last 😍 @anges
Have fun Sue 😍 @suerichards
Leaves will be fine Jane remember beast from east they all recovered from frost that year 😀
Good point Keely, thank you 🙏 @Keely
Still looks so healthy 💚 the last 2 frosts here have decimated my 3 youngest hydrangeas and a schizophragma 😢
Oh no Kerry, are they salvageable? @kez001uk 🤔
@pelly I hope so but one doesnβt look like it has any life left 😐
Might it be worth cutting it right down and giving it a good feed I wonder? 🤔 @kez001uk
@pelly Iβll give that a try, thanks Jane 😊 anything that gives it a fighting chance 🤞🏻

Lots of new growth on my Hydrangeas. I hope the old flowers will protect it if we get any frosts #hydrangea
I'm dying to cut the old flowers off but I will show great restraint in case we do get a frost... β😁
Me too Ange, theyβre starting to look really messy now @anges 😱😂
I know, think they're the only brown crispy things in the garden now - I've actually tidied everything else (except for the leaves on the borders which I leave to rot down) 😉
If it makes you feel better, where I volunteer has lots of hydrangeas and I think it was March last year when we started to cut off the old flowers, possibly even later! 🙂 @pelly @anges
Thanks Sue, I think it was March last year for me too @lilybee Not too much longer to wait β³👍

Lucky you! Mine have had so much frost now i think they have given up! They are barely coming from the root!.
Oh no, I do hope they recover Sylvia, this one and the other one the same are in quite a shaded area and started new growth quite early @SylviaDavies 😱👍
Morning Jane @pelly Iβve got a few flower heads on 1 if mine buys still very green no sign of colour. Funny thing though Iβve got 5 Hydrangeas & 1 seems to be the more tasty one has been eaten the other 4 nothing ever & they are close to each other 😘
Morning Suzie, how odd!! Iβm sure theyβll be fine, yours are always beautiful @jadojado29 😍😘
Morning Jane @pelly again think I have lost this one itβs a mass of holes but Iβm leaving it hopefully they wonβt start on the others 🤞 might take a few cuttings from it . Hoping the Blue one & Limelight come out like last year as they were Gorgeous, thanks Jane 😘

#advice please. Everywhere I read, itβs telling me to prune this (including this app) so my dilemma is, do I do it now or wait until the next cold snap is over? Itβs got so much new growth on the stems and the base. 🤔🤔
Mine is like this Jane and I know Iβm a lot further North than you but I tend to play safe with these things. I am waiting until March when I hope it will be warmer. I havenβt pruned my roses yet as we keep getting frosts - eg last night and they say there is a very cold system coming this week. So Iβd keep it tucked up and warm for another couple of weeks. Hope this helps.
Mines even further on Jane but Iβm leaving til this latest cold weather has passed over 😬
To be honest Jane I only give my hydrangeas a good old prune every couple of years I leave the heads on until the last frost and even last year we still had a late frost which burnt the new buds that had come through so I would be tempted to leave it for a couple of years give it time to get established βΊοΈ
I was wondering the same Jane @pelly as all mine have new growth even the cuttings I took but Iβm going to leave them until this cold weather has passed at least the cuttings Iβm going to move into the greenhouse (unheated) just for protection 😘
Just swiping through your pics of this one Jane she's a beautyβ€οΈ
@jendren thanks Nicola, that's what I thought, I haven't done my roses either. @jendren 😘👍
Thanks Julie, that was what I thought @juliesgarden 👍😘
Great advice Nessa, I'll leave them then. They are both quite a good shapes anyway. @nessas 😘👍
I asked the same question to a gardener at the York Gate Garden yesterday Jane and his reply was most emphatic, he doesn't prune them until April where he'll take a 1/3 off to a 1/2 and remove any spindly or inward growing branches. I think that makes sense to me. @pelly
She is Denise, but I didn't realise I'd taken so many photos!! @Denise16 😂😂
It does Jeremy, thanks so much for passing that on @jpea 👍👍

It certainly is Jane. Are you going to dry any of yours to use indoors? I might give it a go. I noticed Laura @columbiariver drying hers
I hadn't really thought about it, I don't really do indoor flowers Sue @susanhumphrey333 😊😊
Gorgeous 🌸💕🌸 I always bring a few in and dry them for a bit of colour in the indoors @susanhumphrey333
Do you dry them indoors hung upside down Rachel @rachelbrooks 🤔
Look forward to seeing the arrangement Laura 😊👍 @columbiariver
I just cut them, pop them in a vase of water for a few days and then just stand them in an empty vase and let them do their thing Sue, I donβt cut them all off, only if thereβs a lot left on the shrub Laura @susanhumphrey333 @columbiariver

My shop bought Hydrangeas that flowered so beautifully in early spring are full of new growth after pruning and few weeks ago 💖💖💖

Fantastic! They're such resilient plants 👍🏼👍🏼

This was shop bought so flowered early, the flowers are fading fast so should I prune it back to the new shoots? #advice 🤔🤔🤔
As it is early you can prune down to the new buds as it was shop brought it might have been forced to flower for quick sell. When your big mops have finished flowering on plant leave on to protect new buds from frost then take old flower mops off in the spring down to the new buds.🐞
I left my shop bought one to spring following year Jane and still flowers coming this year and its alot healthier too 😄
Mine is also now losing its flowers Jane @pelly so you have answered a question that I was going to ask 👍😘
