1/2 mystery solved. The ladder clematis are different plants. That explains the extreme growth difference. The plant in the right is a Sweet Autumn. I've read it self seeds and can be invasive. #zone5b #zone5

2 volunteers from my sister's garden, planted at the same time, gets the same sun and water. No blooms this year so I'm guessing they bloom on old wood. #clamatis #zone5 #zone5b #petitelakeshedgarden

Thanks @gjones it used to be the ladder I used to get to the roof until my husband referred to it as the widower maker. We now have a new ladder and I have a new trellis.
