Moved to a very mature garden in 2016 and need to discover what we've got, as well as making our own mark on it.

This is the 1st year we've had loads of blossom on our Granny Smith tree. Hoping for apples this year.

There are a lot of ants and aphids at the tips of our new apple tree. Is this normal or is there something we need to do?

I used to have this problem with my old apple trees. I used to squish the aphids and then smear the bottom of the trunk with Vaseline to try and deter the ants. They're harvesting the aphids because they produce a honeydew secretion that the ants go mad for. It's rather annoying. Good luck getting rid @piggynugget

Small trees will have more damage then an established tree. Spraying dormant oil in early spring (1/2"growth) will control. As was suggested squishing works as well as strong spray of water. Works on small trees

Thanks for the tip. Never heard of dormant oil before. After googling it seems neem oil may be a good one to try. Any experience or tips to share before I coat the tree in the stuff?

You need to research apple pests and when to treat. There are many organic solutions. Sticky balls, squishing small numbers, or wash ing away. Don't always need to spray if you do spray timing is important. Neem oil is a good choice.
