This beautiful begonia is a start from a plant that a cousin has had since the 80s. It's a very resilient thing. I've nearly killed it several times. Each time, it surprises me and perks back up. I love color of the leaves and the texture! I've asked on multiple platforms, and nobody has a name for it. The cousin called it a Strawberry begonia. Which doesn't match the plant that we know with that name today. #begonia #easilypropagated #whatisthisplant #canyounamethisbegonia
@docthrill @hkyfvr I think you're on to something. Maybe a hybrid? I have another begonia on its way called a Tiger Kitten. If you crossed it with a jive, you might have my "Strawberry".
I just took another look at a pic of mine. Looks a lot like yours but leaves are rounder. If it was crossed with another with the pointy leaves you could end up with one like yours. I think too yours is an eyelash begonia as it has eyelash like protrusions all around the leaf. 💚❤️😊
If it dates back to the 80s it might be super hard to trace, unless it's an unimproved wild plant. Even if it's a brand-new hybrid it can be nearly impossible to tease out the species name. They just call it a Rex, or an Eyelash, sometimes the cultivar name with no botanical name, and leave you guessing. It looks like something in the neighborhood of "Amelia's Kaleidoscope" or "Red Planet" but both of those varieties are brand new...
Lol. @emch when he first told me that he was gonna send me a start I was pumped and nervous, this would be my first begonia. Did all kinds of research and got even more excited because it wasn't a true begonia. Thought it would be an easy plant. Then here was this thing that looks Nothing like the plant I studied for. Lol. Its been on the brink of death twice in the last year. Right now, its only slightly larger than when I first got it. Only time will tell if it survives my care or not.
The plant that I studied for, in preparation for this plant, is called Strawberry Begonia or Strawberry geranium. It is neither. Its a Saxifraga stolonifera. The plant I received is, indeed, a Begonia.

Lovely begonia. Had this one and could not find the name. Unfortunately I killed mine. It looks a little like a “Jive “. @docthrill may know ?
@hkyfvr I kinda like that nobody knows it's name... it keeps it unique. And makes me work harder to keep it alive.
I think it’s a #jive too

It's so not a strawberry begonia.

What do you mean it's not a true begonia? What kind were you expecting? Is there such a thing as a false begonia?

Ahhh, I see. I thought you were expecting a begonia and got some cheap imitation!
