I don't know how or why it grew constricted like that. That happened early last year before normal growth resumed.
It probably didn't get enough light at some point. Cacti will 'stretch' when there isnt enough light, but will start growing normally again once it gets proper light.

Im disappointed that this cactus etiolated itself somehow and for some unknown reason. I'm thinking about slicing the top off because I can't tolerate etiolation!

This was my first cactus. Potted 9-19-17 the first act for all my cacti was to pot them and prepare them for indoor wintering.
This year he turns five shortly after I turn 35. This was my first cactus and a gift to myself for my 30th birthday! Unfortunately he decided to be a total d!ck and not grow normally. I meant that literally.
