Good afternoon everyone! Here's another Indian native, new on GT! Known as Bael locally, this tree is used in traditional medicine and is considered sacred. The fruit is very hard, takes about a year to ripen, smells divine but is extremely tart. In worship, the trifoliate leaves represent a trident. I've had 3 of these for years, but this one has sprouted from a piece of root in the soil!! #bael #indian #newongt #medicinal
Technically, one could, @gjones - but we don't. The trees are cultivated commercially and in home gardens primarily for the foliage, which is an offering in rituals. The fruit is the secondary product, and is sold in the markets only during festivals where its presence is a requisite. It IS edible but it's not terribly tasty. However, you present an interesting possibility. With enough sugar and dilution, perhaps it could be consumed AND enjoyed! :)
Yes there are more than one variety :) it's unlikely they use this one. I've eaten it and it really is most unpleasant. But then so is passion fruit until one dilutes it @gjones
