The oldest 'plant' in my garden - the Indian banyan! This 6 ft specimen is 25 years old. Originally planted by my mum, it's still in its original container, albeit repotted over the years. Consequently, it's become a sort of semi-bonsai with aerial roots! This tree is known for its longevity and extensive canopy; a particular tree in India was described by Alexander's general as having sheltered 7000 men (2000 ft circumference with 3000 trunks). #ficus #indianbanyan #newongt #nationaltree

With its medicinal uses, this tree is deeply ingrained in Hindu and Buddhist cultures and is thus the National Tree of India. #medicinal

It can indeed, Janice! I've seen proper Banyan bonsais at our flower shows here :) my mum plans to plant ours into the ground in a few years' time, once they've retired on a hilltop. @lovestogarden
