2/2 Here's a closeup of an individual flower. The red calyx bore 6 #berries but only one remains. The rest have been dropped. #ochna #newongt #new #africa
Happy Sunday everyone! By far the oddest shrub in my garden, this Mickey Mouse plant is native to #tropical #Africa ! The flowering and fruiting sequence is mind boggling. The outer lemon-green calyx surrounds yellow petals. After the petals wither, the calyx closes again and CHANGES its colour to pink!! Inside the calyx, 1-6 berry like drupelets of fruit develop on a receptacle. As the berries ripen, the calyx turns scarlet and REOPENS to expose the immature drupelet berries.
Some berries fall prematurely whilst others develop into glossy black berries that resemble the ears of Mickey Mouse. The resilient calyx lasts longer than the berries! The yellow petals, the red flowers (actually a calyx), and green & black berries are all observed on one plant!
Ipomoea purpurea (Common Morning Glory) is a HUGE problem on the Sunshine Coast where I live. So pretty, but so weedy. http://keys.lucidcentral.org/keys/v3/eafrinet/weeds/key/weeds/Media/Html/Ipomoea_purpurea_(Common_Morning_Glory).htm
