22/05/19 - update on my root cuttings from a Brugmansia taken at college. The root pieces now have their own roots! 😊👍🏼, and I’ve potted these two pieces up into a light well draining mix of compost and perlite till they get a bit bigger #brugmansia #brugmansia-propagation #propagation #propagation-rootcuttings #rootcuttings #propagation-brugmansia
18/02/19 - Project Update - in November last year, our college group took root cuttings of various plants in the gardens and glasshouse where we train, and I took some from the Brugmansia in the glasshouse. Brugmansia x candida - not all plants can be propagated by root cuttings, but Brugmansia can be done this way. Using 5cm long pieces of root, they are simply pushed into a peat/perlite 50/50 mix and covered with a layer of gravel.
No watering is initially required for root cuttings as the piece of root cannot yet take up water in this form and is solely used as a food source, where sugars and starch are stored. Adventitious shoots appear on the end of the root and these start to grow. Eventually, it will start to form its own new roots, and this could be quite a few weeks after the appearance of the shoot. Then it can be watered.
These have been on a heated propagator which keeps the temp around 21 degrees Celsius. Now, I just need to wait a bit longer for the shoot to get bigger before I remove the cover and give it a water. I’m quite excited about this as I’ve always wanted a Brugmansia and was going to try by seed but this has proven quite successful 😄 #brugmansia #brugmansia-propagation #propagation #propagation-rootcuttings #rootcuttings #propagation-brugmansia
Importantly - by doing root cuttings this new plant will be genetically the same as the mother plant (compared to seeds which will show a degree of variation in the new plants)
So can I take a root cutting from mine?? It doesn’t bother the plant that u cut the root from?? Mine is young about 3ft and u take the cutting in winter? What size of a cutting could I take, sorry but in like to try. Your really learning some new techniques 🤗🤗👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊💕
