Another winter growing SA bulb - quite a few species Gladioli grow during the winter time. Trying again to grow this lovely one (previous one passed away to the big bulb heaven in the sky...) - the painted lady Gladioli - should be in flower by March/April time
Thanks Sharon 😊 - they are lovely. Most winter growing glads can be found online in the autumn or late summer as dry bulbs, then they start growing around Oct-Nov. This ones a little late as i was late planting it. But it should settle back in for next year. They’ll need a frost free area for winter as bright as possible 👍🏼 @sharonhayden
It's that time of year where I spend far to much money on bulbs and then wonder where I'm gonna plant them! 😂😂 - Having had some success finally with some winter growing South African species, I'm trying some new ones that I picked up at the Wisley show a couple of weeks ago. It seems I have a thing for Gladioli species now 😉
I thought I had this one two years ago, but that turned out to be Gladiolus angustus (see in my plant list) - so I got some fresh bulbs and fingers crossed these are the right ones. Gladiolus carneus (Painted Lady Gladiolus) and these amazing flesh pink blooms. It starts growing now, through winter and will bloom in late spring (not frost hardy, so under cover) #gladiolispecies #gladiolus #gladiolus-carneus #paintedladygladiolus #bulb #wintergladiolus
Hope so @cyndi - this was the one I originally wanted but after waiting two years it was then a mislabelled one. I heard it looks amazing when in flower. I was lucky to get about 4 bulbs (as not as easily available here)
@ukgardentags @angiej - hi GT team - in my quest to ensure plant names are accurate, would you mind updating this one? It's a straight species (not a cultivar/variety) so Latin name is simply Gladiolus carneus , and common name is 'Painted Lady Gladiolus' - many thanks 🙏🏼
