It’s late on a Saturday night and I’m rock’n’rolling it by reading online research papers 😂 I find taxonomy fascinating. I bought the variegated form of Hylotelephium seiboldii last spring on a GTag meet-up, but I’ve been intrigued by its name as the one shown in GT is listed as a synonym on the RHS website. Finally got round to investigating more, and it seems 'Mediovariegatum' may not have been the first mention of this plant in scientific literature and it is was first found in a Japanese
botanical journal earlier than the said reference to ‘Mediovariegatum’, and in Japan where this originates from it was instead known as 'Misebaya-nakafu'. Taxonomy relies on the principal of precedency so the first name published in a science journal should normally take precedent. V. Interesting article here from the sedum society from July 2019, from p88 for anyone interested in the history of this plant 🤓👍🏼
The report also suggests in cultivation that reversion to green rather than variegated leaves is common and if not cut out quickly they end up dominating the plant. Easy to propagate, often late flowering and can be susceptible to slug/snail attacks over winter.
Aw, thanks Shona 😊🙏🏼 @sho47 , I know a lot of us moan about name changes of plants etc, but it must have been much harder back in the days before modern technology, and communications.
I love that you get carried away...not on a stretcher or in a black Mariah you understand....I can’t help but think of you as the horti version of Doc Brown from Back to The Future 😘😘😘 Still crossing my fingers for your attendance on the 16th x x x
Oh yes, nothing like geeking out over a journal article (or an academic book). 😁 This afternoon someone stroke a conversation with me as I was reading a psychology book over coffee, and they got more than they bargained for... 😂 The guy just said that he started reading the same book and wanted to know if it was worth carrying on. Poor fella! 30 minutes later he was still there listening about the psychology of politics and morality lol
